Welcome We all have the occasional desire to get lost, to sample the new and the unusual – especially in our modern world, where authentic experiences are scarce. An adventure can be anything out of the ordinary, though, of course, this doesn’t mean suffering in tough surroundings. Experience the wonders of the world with unique, breathtaking trips while staying in the finest suites, game reserves and, in some cases, moving camps. We’ve compiled adventure packages that combine the luxe with the extraordinary, giving the elite traveler the best of both worlds (and one that is literally out of this world – see page 83). Of course, these trips need to be properly documented. Turn to our technology page to see the top personal drones and latest Hasselblad camera to capture those once-in-a-lifetime moments. New to this issue is our Hot List – an exclusive roundup of the top hotel openings, the best trips and places you must visit. For our very first Hot List, we’ve selected two incredible journeys: a private estate in Santorini and St. Regis’s first private island resort. We also bring you spring fashion – from 50th-anniversary limited-edition Bottega Veneta handwoven gold sunglasses, to 80s-style sharp shoulders. Also, watch specialist Roberta Naas, fresh from the exclusive Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva, shares the wrist trends of 2017. As ever, the Elite Traveler editorial team has been exploring destinations from New York to Dubai to bring you a guide to where to stay and where to see and be seen. Watchmaker Gérald Genta’s iconic Royal Oak design has been given a sexy black-ceramic twist

Watches

A HIGH-TECH ROYAL OAK

At this year’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva, Audemars Piguet released a watch that had everyone buzzing: a black-ceramic Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar. Converting Gérald Genta’s iconic design to ceramic was not an easy task. It took more than 600 hours of research alone to develop the watch, which takes five times longer to make than the stainless-steel version. This is because the properties that make ceramic so desirable – being virtually scratchproof and able to handle both high temperatures and significant temperature variations – also make it more difficult to work with, leading to additional steps in the creation of this hand-finished watch. While the case and bracelet are high tech, a Grande Tapisserie decoration on the gray dial brings classic horology to the modern timepiece. It displays the weeks around the outer chapter ring, with subdials for month and leap year, date, day of the week and moon phase. The photorealistic astronomical moon brings a touch of lightness to the all-black watch. $93,900, available at Audemars Piguet in NewYork, contact Susan Wallace, boutiquemanager, +1 212 688 6644, audemarspiguet.com

H Moser & Cie has never been shy about making a statement – for example, confronting the smartwatch with a mechanical “anti-Apple Watch.” This year, in an elegant protest against the newly loosened regulations of the “Swiss made” label, the company has removed the term from all of its timepieces, which are over 95 percent Swiss. Horological Machine No.7 – Aquapod

Through his creations, Maximilian Büsser (of Maximilian Büsser & Friends, or MB&F) has explored robots, outer space, spiders and the automotive world. It’s only natural that he would turn his gaze to the intriguing depths of the ocean. What’s perhaps not as natural is how difficult this timepiece turned out to be to create. Horological Machine No.7 took so long to design that it comes out after Horological Machine No.8! However, the jellyfish-inspired Aquapod is well worth the wait. This wildly different timepiece eschews the current mantra frommany watch companies that thinner is better. Here, each major component is concentrically mounted on a central axis, forming a tall movement that MB&F has encased in spherical sapphire crystal to make something that looks like, yes, a jellyfish moving through the ocean. Continuing the jellyfish theme, the watch has a rotor with tentacles made from titanium and a “floating” ceramic bezel that is not attached to the case. It glows in the dark on the indexes and hands and through the inside of the movement to illuminate the tourbillon and rotor, much like certain incandescent species of jellyfish. While it’s not a dive watch, it is waterproof to 5 meters. Chapter rings display hours and minutes, and the “hood” of the jellyfish is a flying tourbillon. $98,000 in blue ceramic and titanium, available at Westime in Beverly Hills, +1 310 888 8880, mbandf.com

CUNNING CAMO

Military themes ruled the spring/ summer 2017 men’s runways – from camouflage prints, to bomber jackets and Top Gun -centric jumpsuits. Aviators and a bomber jacket: It’s currently the must-have look for striding across tarmac. For spring 2017, menswear designers have unquestionably adopted a fighter-pilot frame of mind, starting with Valentino, where Maria Grazia Chiuri (in the season prior to her departure for Dior) and Pierpaolo Piccioli offered up a heavy dose of military-inspired pieces – including an exquisite camo- print overcoat – modernized with deconstructed details. At Dior Homme, Kris van Assche’s bomber jackets and trench coats were among the best of the season, infused with just a touch of punk styling but never veering beyond a highly wearable sensibility. For the especially adventurous, military-inspired jumpsuits could be found at Paul Smith and Public School – just in case you feel like strutting like Tom Cruise while discussing “the need for speed.” The Eisenhower jacket, meanwhile, made a chic comeback at Bottega Veneta; and Hermès, the house known for iconic silk prints, put a modern spin on a graphic camouflage pattern.

Stefano Ricci’s made-to-measure suits can take up to 120 hours of work

Seams Perfect Every well-dressedman should boast at least one made-to- measure or bespoke suit in his closet. While each is exceptional in fit, there is a difference. Made-to-measure suits see existing styles and patterns tailored to the client’s measurements. With a bespoke suit, the client selects everything – from fabric and cut, to the buttons and the color of the lining. Both require the time and talents of a tailor. At Stefano Ricci, just outside Florence, a made-to-measure suit can take up to 120 hours of work. For spring 2017, Ricci is emphasizing the beauty of details in a suit that might be called the ultimate classic: three-piece styling highlighted by a two-button jacket with slightly rounded shoulders and a structured, hand-stitched lapel. Ricci’s master tailors often travel to clients for orders and fittings. Likewise, Savile Row tailor Kathryn Sargent logs plenty of frequent- flier miles for her clients – in March she’s slated for personal appearances inWashington, DC, New York, Chicago and San Francisco. We asked her to offer tips to ensure your bespoke or made-to-measure suit remains a forever piece in your wardrobe. Single vs double: “Double-breasted suits look great when they are worn fastened, but they are much more formal than a single- breasted cut. A single-breasted suit is more versatile and can be dressed up or down,” Sargent says. “I would advise a shorter client that a three-button suit can lengthen your torso, and if you’re heavier, a two-button suit can add shape and define the waist.” Lapels matter: “Make sure your lapel size suits your frame,” she advises. “A very large lapel on a slight frame can make the jacket look overwhelming, and a thin lapel on a larger frame can make the jacket look too small and out of proportion.” Opt for style vs fad. Bespoke and made-to-measure tailoring transcend seasonal trends. “Avoid overpowering statement looks,” Sargent says. “A well-fitting suit is timeless and can be worn for decades to come, if it is well looked after.” Stefano Ricci, 407 Park Avenue, New York, stefanoricci.com Kathryn Sargent, 37 Savile Row, London, kathrynsargent.com

Women’s style

Yes, yes, yes, the 1980s are back, and have been for a few seasons now. While outrageous sleeves have yet to trickle down into the everyday, sharp shoulders are a low-key way to work the trend into your wardrobe. In Paris, all eyes were on Saint Laurent, as Anthony Vaccarello presented his debut collection – a very 80s-style affair, full of black leather, gold lamé and puffy sleeves. He also showed a short series of suiting-inspired looks with crisp lines. A standout is Le Smoking jumpsuit, which would make a stunning look for your next black-tie affair. Coupled with flats (as on the runway), it could even be worn on a fun night out. At Louis Vuitton, creative director Nicolas Ghesquière has shifted his focus to sophisticated tailoring. Deconstructed suits and pieces with sexy cutouts came down the runway, with cutouts continuing throughout the entire collection. We love the skirt suit, which would be as much at home in the boardroom as it would walking into a fashion show. Phoebe Philo always manages to send a parade of supremely wearable, “need-to-have-it-now” clothes and accessories down the catwalk at Céline. This season, boxy jackets and loose trousers make a strong statement, without being corporate in any way. The very loose woven trousers worn with a crisp white blazer would be a great look for creative professionals. SHARP SHOULDERS

Vintage clasp An oversized clasp that

would not look out of place on a vintage trunk is a focal feature on Dolce & Gabbana’s Lucia bag

Last year, Dolce & Gabbana introduced the Lucia bag, which is sure to become as popular as the company’s iconic Sicily bag thanks to its clean lines and details, which are inspired by the designers’ love of travel. While the bag is quite modern, the clasp could have been pulled straight from a vintage trunk, lending a sweet touch. The Lucia comes in a range of sizes and colors, but we’re partial to the color-blocked smaller clutches and bags. COLORED DIAMONDS

Some of the world’s most famous stones are colored diamonds, and for good reason. Only one in 10,000 diamonds is certified as a fancy-colored diamond. This rarity alone is enough to make them highly collectible, and then, of course, there’s that other element that is so important in jewelry: beauty. Colored diamonds are simply mesmerizing. At The One and Only One, GIA-certified gemologists work exclusively with natural fancy-colored diamonds. The ring here has a 1.01-carat fancy deep blue diamond with a rare color saturation only found in the old Golconda mines in India, which is where the Hope Diamond originated. In London, David Morris and Graff Diamonds are known for their work with colored diamonds. David Morris uses a staggering number of fancy vivid yellow diamonds in this elegant spiral bangle. Graff brings new life to a solitaire ring with its Swirl design covered in pavé pink diamonds. Bulgari’s showstopping necklace features a 12.47-carat fancy vivid yellow diamond. JB Star uses fancy

yellow briolette-cut diamonds to great effect, creating a highly saturated pair of earrings that catch the light in an incredible

Pure gold Diamonds are forever, but there’s something about

architectural jewelry in gorgeous gold that is pure and beautiful. In Paris, Gaia Repossi modernized her family’s brand with avant- garde high jewelry that uses significant stones in unexpected ways. “It’s a new and quite radical approach,” Gaia says, “with huge respect for traditions and craftsmanship.” Also on the cutting edge is Anita Ko, known for her unique designs that don’t treat fine jewelry as too “precious” to be innovative. This choker has a pear-shaped diamond on one end and a marquis-shaped diamond on the other. Both Ippolita and Vhernier use gold to create curved, sensual pieces. Vhernier’s ring is ultra-slick and modern, and Ippolita’s cuff has a more raw feeling. From the Supernova collection, this David Yurman ring explodes with differently shaped points topped with diamonds. New York-based jeweler Gurhan works with 24K “pure gold,” for its rich, warm color. Reviving techniques from ancient goldsmiths, today artisans hammer the metal by hand, giving each piece a unique look. Belperron, a recently revived early 20th-century brand, uses original designer Suzanne Belperron’s sketches to create jewelry that still feels modern. The earclips use 22K “virgin gold.”

Timeless elegance The iconic Jaguar XKSS features leather seats and a wooden steering wheel, just like the original 1957 models

STUNNING SHEETMETAL

Of all the significant news to surface from the Los Angeles Auto Show, one of the best announcements had nothing to do with cutting-edge technology or forward-thinking design. Jaguar Classic, the division of Jaguar Land Rover in charge of historical preservation, dropped cover on an all-new XKSS, with a production run of just nine units, designed to the exact specifications of the iconic model originally created in 1957. This is the same Jaguar of Steve McQueen fame – a car that the King of Cool himself owned, loved, parted ways with and, after 20 years of regret, reacquired from the Las Vegas tycoon he’d sold it to. The count of nine cars makes sense in light of the svelte Jag’s story. The XKSS was originally projected to be a limited series of 25 cars, but a tragic factory fire laid claim to nine examples. These current cars will use the original serial numbers first allotted to the nine scrapped cars, thus closing the door on the brand’s “unfinished business.” Much like it did with the run of six E-Type Lightweight coupés in 2014–15, Jaguar Classic spent significant time and resources to blueprint four of the 16 original XKSS cars in existence to ensure an absolutely accurate build.

One could be quick to speculate that modern manufacturing methods would be used to help streamline the build process of these recreations; however, this couldn’t be further from the truth. From the magnesium alloy and hand-rolling techniques used to create its body panels, to the bronze- welding technique used to construct its frame, Jaguar Classic has pulled out all the stops to ensure these rare beasts are as true to the original as possible. The only step outside of its classic roots falls in the fuel system, since a stronger and safer fuel cell is used to protect its occupants in the event of a crash, and different gaskets are used in a handful of places to account for the fact that the current model will be running on unleaded fuel. When it comes to everything else – the original Smiths gauges, the two-piece magnesium-alloy wheels and even the size, type and location of the thousands of rivets that hold many key components in place – every last detail is as it was in the 1957 model. Of course the 10,000+ man hours required to complete each build comes at a premium, with each car already being earmarked as sold for a cool $1.4m. jaguar.com/classic

TAKE THREE/// ULTIMATE RVs

1. BLISSMOBIL MERCEDES-BENZ ZETROS 6X6 When it comes to long-distance travel, not everyone is content to stick to the paved freeway. Enter Bliss Mobil, the Netherlands-based outfit that builds the ultimate in off-road-capable RVs. These are available in a variety of chassis options – ranging from an 11ft Unimog, up to the monstrous six-wheeled Mercedes-Benz Zetros seen here. While their interiors are a little more spartan than our two other offerings, the Zetros are engineered to tackle the harshest conditions on earth and can pack enough resources to sustain travelers for up to 90 days completely off the grid. From $200,000, blissmobil.com 2. FEATHERLITE PREVOST VANTARÉ H3-45-S2 The Prevost bus chassis conversion is always the name of the game for North American RVs, and Featherlite is a leader in the category. At a whopping 45ft long and using numerous slide-outs, the Prevost conversions can offer more square footage than your average New York studio apartment. Fully customizable, these three-axle diesel behemoths can quite easily crack the $2m benchmark, depending on how they’re configured. From $1.9m, Mark Eisenhart, meisenhart@ featherlitecoaches.com, featherlitecoaches.com

3. VARIOMOBIL PERFECT 1200 PLATINUM Germany-based company Vario has been around since 1985, but what really set it apart was an early innovation in 1990 that saw it include an on-board garage in the structure of its über-luxe motorhomes. Vario’s latest top-tier model is based on a Mercedes Diesel chassis, and this triple-axle beast can be clad in just about any exotic woods and fine leathers your heart desires. cars, whether they’re on the street or the track. As with most supercars of late, we don’t doubt that most of the Beast Alphas that will hit the road in 2017 won’t necessarily spend much time at the race track. However, with such a potent package they’ll certainly be up to the task if given the chance. $200,000, rezvanimotors.com

The Beast Alpha isn’t shy on quality, either. In the interior, task-driven sports seats, a leather-clad console and dash, and a programmable, fully digital instrument cluster give the cabin a luxurious yet thoughtful feel. On the exterior, LED lighting, an exposed carbon front lip and rear diffuser, and a pair of peculiar wing mirrors are interesting details. However, the real showstopper of its exterior design is the doors. At first glance, the rather unusual but extremely practical swinging/sliding doors look like a spin on the sliding doors most commonly seen in minivans. But Rezvani didn’t build this thing just to look fast. Adjustable suspension, a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox and carbon-ceramic brakes are all available as options to allow its owners to get the best performance from their

These days, Porsche, Ferrari and other major automotive companies are shifting their focus toward hybrid and full-electric platforms. California-based boutique supercar house Rezvani has opted for a traditional-yet-effective approach. Its third creation, the Beast Alpha, packs a 500bhp turbocharged Honda Racing 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine into a Lotus-derived aluminum chassis wrapped in carbon fiber with a curb weight of less than 2,000lb, making for a simple and lightweight rocket whose 0–60mph time is only 10ths of a second slower than that of the Lamborghini Huracan.
