The University ofSan Diego SETTING
The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of hi gher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking Mi ssion Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pac ific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Spanish vill age near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuri es later and founded a university whose buildings became the inspirati on for USD's architectural style. THE CAMPUS The USD campus is regarded as one of the most architecturall y unique insti– tutions in the country, featuring major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spani sh Renaissance sty le. Since 1984, USO has completed numerous major construction and expansion projects. In 2000 the Jenny Craig Pavilion, a 5, I 00-seat athletic center, opened its doors as home to USO volleyball and bas– ketball. In the Fall of 2001 the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice opened on the west end of campus, and a new Science and Technology Center recently opened for the 2003-04 academic year. A five-story, Spanish Renais– sance parking garage ( I, I00 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped foun– tain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university com– pleted the 45,000 square foot Loma Hall, which includes an expanded book- store, a larger ·> mail center,
classrooms and laboratories. ACADEMICS
USO enrolls more than 7,200 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. i The university's academic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Edu– cation, Law and Nursing. Class size generally averages be– tween 18-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doctor– ates. In the annual rati ngs of the country's colleges and uni ver– sities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The universi ty is ranked among the top I00 school s in the nation. STUDENT LIFE Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat
cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, com– edy nights, symposia and much more. Stu– dents participate in a
DID YOU KNOW ? * The family of Donald and Darlene Shiley made the largest donation in its long history of philanthropy in 2002, a $10 mil– lion naming gift for what will be known as the Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology. Construction for the 150,000-square foot Center began in 2001. * The new Center, which opened this Fall, contains 73 state-of-the-art laboratory fa– cilities for chemistry, biology, marine sci– ence and environmental studies, biochem– istry, physics and related sciences. * Additionally, the building will include aquariums, an astronomy deck, an aviary, a greenhouse, and conference areas to ac– commodate gatherings of science-related groups and organizations.

The intramural program is also an integral part of student life on campus with over two-thirds of the USO community partaking in intramural sports. ATHLETICS The University of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearly all sports and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. The football team is in its tenth season in the Pioneer Football League . Women's sports include: basketball, cross country, rowing, soccer, softball , swimming, tennis and vol– leyball. Men's sports include: baseball , basketball, cross country, golf, football, rowing, soccer and tenni s. Since 1990 USO teams have made 38 NCAA post-season appear– ances; garnered 35 All -America selections; had 32 Conference Coaches of the Year; 25 Conference Players of the Year; 14 Conference Freshmen of the Year; won 13 confer– ence championships; and 4 WCC Scholar Athletes of the Year. Last season Ryan Coiner earned hi s second West Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Year award, as well as hi s second NSCAA All-America honor.
