2003 Season Outlook

~----~ San Diego head coach Seamus McFadden , enteri ng hi s 25 th season di recti ng the Torero men's soccer fortu nes, wiII have a nice blend of experience and youth for the upcoming 2003 soccer campaign. McFadden returns six starters and twelve letterwinners from last year's 14-6 club that advanced to the NCAA Tournament - for the fi fth straight season. The Toreros will be looking for thi s group ofreturners to step in and fi ll some of the vo id left by the graduati on of two-time All-America forward Ryan Coiner, all-confe rence sweeper Garrett Turk, and two seniors that were accorded All– WCC honorabl e menti on recognition - forward Tyler Conley and goa lie Parker Jarvi s. McFadden will look to seni or captains Scott Burcar and Sy Reeves to provide the leadership thi s season. Burcar, a midfi elder, was named the 2002 WCC De– fender of the Year and was also named First Team All-West Coast Conference. Reeves, who rece ived a medical redshirt season after inj uring hi s knee early in the 2002 campaign, returns to forward where he is expected to provide the Toreros some much needed offense.

2003 Team Captains Scott Burcar (I OJ and Sy Reeves ( 7)

Offensively Reeves will be helped out by the return of two seni or midfi elders that were both All-WCC Second Team last season - Eric Wunderle and Matt McCausland. Wunderle is th e team's top returning scorer after he netted 7 goals and passed off fo r 5 ass ists fo r 19 points. McCausland, a two-time All-WCC 2nd Team perfo rmer, was third on the team w ith 17 points (5 goa ls, 7 assists). Additional returners expected to step in and add some offensive might include junior forwards Scott Martin and Andrew Ehrich, as well as midfielders Kevin Wilson , Nathan Leboffe and Connor Duncan. Defensive ly the Toreros have depth with the return of senior defenders Kellen Hiroto (WCC Honorable Mention), Stephen Adams, Noah Manning and Alex Romagnolo. USD's defensive unit will also be bolstered by a trio ofplayers from Gothenberg, Sweden - sophomore returner Calle Rendahl , a midfi elder who appeared in all 20 games last season, and newcomers Tommy Von Bromsen (defender) and Jan Prochazka (midfie ld). Five pl ayers that redshirted last season are back and w ill be vying fo r pl aying time. Lance Friesz is projected to start in goa l fo r the Toreros, while Kevin Meissner (D/MF), Michael Caso (MF/F), Sean Turner (D), and Aaron Croutch (MF/F) will all compete fo r playing time. Once again coach McFadden brought in a top fres hman class that is led by forwa rd Ryan Guy (La Costa Canyon HS) and midfi elder Eric Pohl (Corva llis, OR). Jeremy Butcher (Granite Bay, CA) will compete for playing

time in goa l aga inst Friesz, and defender Brett Hiroto, the younger brother of senior Kell en, will hone hi s skill s thi s season and is expected to pl ay a key ro le during his four years at USD. Freshman goalie Erik Hans Hagstrom will redshirt during the 2003 campaign. The Toreros will pl ay their first nine games, and thirteen of their first fifteen, in the friendl y confi nes ofTorero Stadium . The nonconfere nce home slate is hi gh– lighted by the li kes of Oregon State, Cal State Full erton, Santa Barbara and UCLA. West Coast Confere nce play begins October 17th with a home match agai nst Sa in t Mary's , fo ll owed by visi ts from San Francisco and Loyo la Marymount. The Toreros close ----------------- out their wee schedul e wi th Final 2002 WCC Standings - three stra ight road games at Team WCC Overall Gonzaga, Portl and and Santa Portland*# 5-1-0 13-6-1 Clara.
