Engage ​ ​ → Launch the Lesson: Meiosis & Sexual Reproduction Focus Question: What are the stages of meiosis, and how does meiosis provide genetic variation? Explore & Expand ​ → Have students start out with cross comparing the importance of cell structures and their functions. Follow up - How do these structures play a vital role in mitosis? Have students work in groups of four to formulate a claim of why brothers and sisters look different. Let them present their ideas as a class discussion. Interactive Content Explore and explain: Chromosome Numbers Next have students annotate pg’s 232 & 233. Have them focus on what occurs during the process of meiosis and the reduction of chromosomes. Prior Knowledge: Question students of where have they heard of other individuals having one to many chromosomes - guide them to Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21). Explain the importance of receiving 50% of your genes from your Mom and 50% from your Dad. Then have students read about the importance of homologous chromosomes.
