SGBI STAFF UPDATE

T here have been two recent staff changes at Santa Ger- trudis Breeders International (SGBI) that we want you to be aware of. These changes include the hiring of Emma Ramirez and Melissa Braden. Ramirez Joins SGBI as Member Services Associate

Melissa Braden has joined SGBI as a DNA coordinator. Melissa is a Navajo (Diné) originally from Ganado, Ariz. Her maternal clan is Tsénjkiní (Cliff Dwell- ing Clan) and paternal clan is Táchii’nii (Red-Running-Into-The-Water). She graduated from New Mexico State University with a bachelor’s degree in animal science. She then pursued graduate research in animal science and microbiology. In 2005, she earned a master’s degree in animal science.

Emma Ramirez recently joined SGBI as a member services associate. Born in Laredo, Texas, Emma spent her early childhood in Zapata, Texas, before moving to Kingsville, Texas, with her mother and family in 1985 after her father died in an oilfield accident. She attended the Texas Career

Institute in San Antonio, Texas, where she earned a Certified Medical Assis- tant certificate. After graduating, she returned to Kingsville, where she worked for a local family medical practice and later as a clerk in the County Tax Office. Emma and her husband, Rene, have three children: Kayla, 15, Sergio, 12, and Kamyla, 7. They enjoy spending time outdoors, and her children are all involved in the Kleberg Kenedy Junior Livestock Show, where they participate in the swine show. In her role, Emma will assist with updating members’ herd inventories, answering the phones and assisting where

Melissa’s professional career includes work with New Mexico State Cooperative Extension, Texas AgriLife Exten- sion and Texas A&M University-Kingsville. She is excited about the opportunity to be a part of SGBI and hopes to make a positive impact. She and her husband, Tylor, have two children, Taw and Tess. They currently reside on the Santa Gertrudis division of the King Ranch. As DNA coordinator, Melissa will assist with the DNA col- lections and processing protocols.
