St. Oliver Plunkett N.S (Newcastle N.S.) A look at the exciting activities, achievements and developments shaping school life this term. Bringing History to Life during January, pupils from 3rd to 6th Class took part in a series of workshops with historian Martin Curley as part of the Heritage in Schools Project. Each class explored history in a hands on and meaningful way.
3rd Class delved into the fascinating world of bogs. Using the Galway Library website, they investigated old maps and local townland names to identify possible bogland areas near Newcastle. After learning about native flora and fauna, including long leaved Sundew, Red Bog Moss and Whitethorn trees, they embarked on a field trip to a local bog. Along the way, they listened for wildlife, identified plant species and even discovered
a fossil and a large Ice Age stone, a memorable outdoor classroom experience. Photograph: pupils from 3rd class during their bog field trip with Martin Curley.
4th Class focused on local history in the Athenry area, particularly castles and their features. They explored the origins of townland names, linking them to local family names and heritage. Their field trip to the site of Newcastle Castle and Templemoyle Graveyard brought history to life, with discussions along the way about eskers, Templevalley and the river that flows into the Clarin.
