BONUSFUN! THIS SEASON’S PAPERDOLLZ

’ rockin to The Babe sta Beat!

W e ’ ve got so much to share in this issue of Babesta Beat! We’re introducing a bunch of new labels to the store, including Barcelona-based Nobodinoz, Danish brand Molo and super cool light-up sneaker label My Pop Shoes! Photographer Amanda Pratt and stylist Michel Onofrio brought them all to life in our fashion stories, Rock & Soul and Fly, and illustrator Talia Handler created whimsical and fun fashion paper dolls featuring the fall collections at Babesta, that you can really pop out and play with! On the gear front, we are psyched about the latest collaboration between Bugaboo & Diesel—the denim ride that will be released in November is right on point with hardware, chunky zippers and pockets. We also have some very special exclusives at Babesta this season. We’re thrilled to release our latest collaboration with our fave rocker tee gurus of Rowdy Sprout! Riffing off the omnipresent grades in restaurant windows city-wide, we present our own “Grade Pending” tee, a must-have for the back-to-school season! Our seal is a bit more stylish we think (sorry New York!), with headphone-donning eagles, flanked by skateboards and kicks. We’re also releasing a special exclusive city-centric collection with Aden + Anais, featuring poppy yellow taxis and yummy street vendor snacks. So much to look forward to, and as always we’ll keep you posted through the season on our Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, weekly newsletters as well as our soon-to-be-launching, freshly designed, even-better website! 2. CHECK OUT | Hanna Liden’s Everything New York’s favorite doughy treat gets art star status as the subject of a public art installation, presented by Kiehl’s and Art Production Fund, thanks to Swedish artist, Hanna Liden. Everything , a collection of large sculptural bagels, will be on display at Hudson River Park through the fall. The city icon has been a staple in Liden’s life since she first came across the breakfast bread while living in the Chelsea Hotel, almost twenty years ago. According to Liden, “the bagel—a circle with no beginning and no end—is evocative of the eternal cycle of city life.” Adding her own punk spin, she spray paints the bagel with black, signifying the city’s grime. Through October 20th 2015, Hudson River Park @ Christopher Street & 6th Ave @ 9th St.

BOBO CHOSES CHATTING WITH

T o the mountains or the sea, to the grocery store or rocker chic LA: Each season Adriana Esperalba, creative director for Spanish label Bobo Choses, leads her 15 person team to a new destination where they explore and express the season’s adventure through a collection of hand illustrated children’s clothes and home goods. Bobo Choses loosely means “innocent things,” and represents the world from which Esperalba derives her inspiration. “We are drawn to everything that comes with the universe of the child: from the carpets in the room to a pretty bag for the mother,” says Esperalba. Each season’s adventure is bound as a children’s book, the original story giving context and greater meaning to the designs. This season we welcome an “Unknown Mountain Journey.” This magical mountain features a talking horse (“Mr. Smith”), flocks of pointillist birds, rubber stamp forests and more expressed on cotton rompers, tees, knit sweaters and flowy dresses. Esperalba began her creative career as a graphic designer in Barcelona. Interested in applying her designs to a new medium, her journey into fashion started in 2009. “We decided to try our luck with a small t-shirt collection at a Playtime trade fair in Paris. We had a very small budget—we slept at my brother’s house, and just crossed our fingers, hoping everything would go well.” The first Bobo Choses collection, dubbed “The Englishman and the sitting bull,” turned heads at the fair, and set the stage for their own business journey as a fashion design label. Bobo Choses is designed just steps from the sea in a converted toy factory in Mataro (not far from Barcelona) where Esperalba’s dreamy, magical world is always brewing, a delicious mix of nature, culture, imagination and fun. We get to know the former graphic designer Esperalba and what’s behind the magic of Bobo Choses. Each collection a story and creative journey, Adriana Esperalba shares the latest from the lighthearted Spanish darling with a serious following.

babesta beat fall/winter 2015

Tell us a little about your background. From a young age I was good at sports. Between the ages of 13 and 18, I was given a scholarship to study and play volleyball while living in a house for athletes. When I was 14 I went on a holiday to Menorca, and my mother’s cousin explained to me what his work consisted of and from that moment I knew that I wanted to be a graphic designer. I studied graphic design at the Elisava school (UPF) in Barcelona and started work in the publicity world, even though I was always much more interested in editorial design and the corporate image. That’s why I decided to set up my own communications studio with a friend of mine. On a whim we left the paper business for clothes and that’s when Bobo Choses arose. I don’t self-identify as a fashion designer, because I feel there is so much left for me to learn. How has Bobo Choses evolved over the years? The spirit is the same, and the philosophy hasn’t changed. We were amateurs at the beginning, but now the team has grown and we have become much more professional. The design scene in kids’ is so hot right now in Barcelona—why do you think that is? Because we finally realized that children’s clothing is important too, but there are countries that are far ahead of us. You do spectacular campaigns every year—the kids are natural, the sets are playful and the clothes shine. Tell me how you do it—what’ the process? We like to think of a story for every collection. We start with memories from when we were young ourselves or with experiences from our own children, and we go on to construct a story line for every season. Some of the kids in the photos have never modeled before, we look for spontaneity and naturalness. We are at the center of the entire creative process, from the sets of the photo shoots, the catalogs to the promotional videos. Everything comes from Bobo. Do your children influence your fashion design decisions or get involved? I have two children; a 7 year old boy, Teo, and a 3 year old girl, Momo. We try out the first prototypes of the collections on them to see their reactions. Generally speaking, boys like to be comfortable, although my son is a little bit more rock star and he likes to try everything. Girls are more coquette , and they like to have more options and something special to wear when they have to get dressed. They help me a lot!

What’s your personal fashion style? Casual—jeans, striped t-shirts and sneakers.

What’s your favorite thing to do on the weekends? Doing some crafts with my children, cooking, going for a run while the sun comes up on the horizon, having a picnic in the mountains. Who would you most want to meet that you have not met? Why? I’m not very star-struck, but I would have liked to have been in the studio of Ettore Sottsass, Sonia Delaunay or Charles and Ray Eames.

What’s your favorite thing about fall fashion? Knitted jumpers.

“I

was crafting with the intensity of a professional athlete,” says Rachel Faucett, publisher, maker and cofounder of DIY blog Handmade Charlotte. Faucett’s rise began with a fortune cookie bloomer she sold on Etsy—she says she applied the laser focus and drive she learned in competitive sports (she was a professional tennis player) to crafting. Soon after, the 42-year old started a site for families looking for the coolest rainy day projects, delicious recipes and creative inspiration. “Focus on a niche and dive deep,” advises Faucett to other makers and entrepreneurs. She says her success came after she honed in on kids’ craft projects. Early on, she caught the eye of Anthropologie, who placed a bulk order of the diaper covers she was making on Etsy. She scrambled with the help of family, friends and a commercial vintage Singer sewing machine, to fulfill the order. Although it was a great boost, it was also a turning point. She says in lieu of manufacturing the finished goods, an enormous undertaking that requires production infrastructure, she decided to produce ideas, which came fast and furious to her. She then gave them away for free via her blog and social networks like Pinterest. This is when she really hit her stride. An early adaptor to social media, Faucett was named one of the 20 most influential pinners on Pinterest by Business Insider. Some of her DIY pins have been shared over a thousand times. Thanks to her success creating compelling and crafty content, she now consults for and contributes to brands like Martha Stewart and Disney Interactive and licenses her Handmade Charlotte brand name to Joann’s, Michael’s and other crafting stores. A dream come true for the creative force, Faucett has made a career of what she loves. She says work and home life are nearly inseparable. Living on a 500-acre horse farm with her husband and five children, ranging from 5 to 15 years old, she spends her work days in a studio on her property, up to her elbows in dry clay, leaves, moss, papers and paints, with her creative team, coming up with the next project to post. Found object color wheels, pom pom, acorn, leaf and gourd crafts and a buttermilk-moss painting project are in the works for this season. Faucett stays light on her feet and is always moving–her creative energy kinetic. She says, “Keep yourself in motion. Don’t focus on the destination –just the movement. It might not end where you think, but you’re always pivoting toward something.”

M iffy , the cherished girl bunny, has been delighting children since her debut in 1955. This year we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the cute character with a movie premiere in London’s West End and an Art Parade that takes vinyl “Miffys” designed by an array of contemporary artists on a world tour. Renditions of the rabbit have been released throughout the year. The final Miffy got a luxurious touch, rendered in gold by Dutch artist Marte Röling. Throughout Japan and Holland, where Dick Bruna’s imagination created Miffy more than half a decade ago, the statues are on display to delight the bunny’s fans. Each of the 60 artists who participated approached her from a different perspective. One of Holland’s most well-known contemporary artists, Rob Scholte, describes his Miffy design entitled Grijs (the Dutch word for grey): “I definitely don’t see the world as black and white. Light doesn’t need darkness.” Japanese designer, Sebastian Masuda shares his Miffy, My Colorful Rebellion—Harajuku Miffy, a bright and imaginative response that arises from deep within her. The statue shows what happens in Miffy’s imagination when she encounters the rich urban culture of Harajuku, a city of freedom and the cradle of a new culture. Another Miffy favorite was designed by New York-based artists Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. The result was an international mashup of florals, Drew Barrymore and Lara Stone (a Dutch model). The statues will be auctioned off for UNICEF after the tour is completed September in the Netherlands and late December 2016 in Japan. Happy Birthday Miffy! Influencers Instagram He rocks so many of Babesta’s favorite brands with the effortless style only a one-year old can pull off. Meet Vida , the latest Itsy Bitsy Instagrammer you have to follow. T hanks to social media the game has changed, and today’s big gest fashion influencers are getting younger and younger. So when we saw the super-fly style of Vida (aka BadBoi_Vivi), we knew he was one to watch. Vida’s style is a reflection of his funny, sensitive, sweet, cat-loving personality and his mom, Natalie’s stylish eye. Bursting from Vida’s closet is a collection of indie designs including Mini Rodini and Bobo Choses, two Babesta style staples! “It’s really easy for me to get carried away when shopping for baby clothes,” explains Natalie. “Everything is so much cuter when it’s tiny, right? But I make sure to buy items that I know we will get lots of use out of. These pieces are usually fun, bright, have amazing graphics and great textures.” Little Vida is looking forward to seamlessly transitioning his layette from summer to fall (still a must in sunny LA). “I can’t wait for layers! Lots of darker staple items; boots, chunky cardigans and denim jackets,” says Natalie, who notes that his vintage Levi’s jean jacket is a can’t-live-without, noting, “It goes with everything in his closet!” of

Vida's New Nursery

We loved watching Vida’s nursery unfold on Instagram and needed to share. Mom Natalie says: “I’m constantly looking into changing up his room to go with his personality and interests at the time. I flipped over a basic bookshelf and painted it. I thought it would look nice against a black chalkboard wall (which would entertain him for years to come). I then picked up some colorful tape and freestyled a geometric wall. It took about 20 minutes and the best part is if we get tired of it, I can easily take it down. It’s cheerful and fun, just like him!”
