We’re Back!
#6 | June 2026
About the Cover
F or the fourth year in a row, Piping Plovers have established two nests at Indian Point/the Hook! Here are a few reminders about how to help protect these very vulnerable visitors: • Dogs are not permitted at Indian Point/the Hook until July 31st.
Chebeague Island Council Calendar June 2026 Issue #6
• Stay clear of fenced areas marked by signs. Please observe the birds from a distance. • Fill holes in the sand so no chicks are inadvertently trapped. • Do NOT fly drones or kites – if you can see the drone or kite, so can the plovers. Plovers mistake them for predators and leave their nests and young to ward off the intruders, put ting both at risk. • ake your trash and food scraps with
you when you leave the beach for the day. Garbage attracts predators. • Notify Maine Audubon of any disturbances 207-245-2353 and Town of Che beague Island Animal Control 203-675-3984. • It is a federal and state offense to disturb these birds – Fines up to $25,000 and potential jail time are real consequences. These birds are monitored by plover teams - Thank you for your support and co operation as we protect these fragile birds that have chosen Chebeague Island to raise their families! About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. It is available on-line at Chebeague Island News (www.chebeague.org) or www. chebeagueislandcalendar.com and delivered to every active mail box on the island. Notes From The Council
Dear Neighbors, Welcome back to our summer residents! You may notice several changes around town since the fall. Work is finishing on the library’s new addition, which will provide a quiet workspace and designated areas for meetings and presentations. While Doughty’s Island Market is taking a break until May 2027, plans are underway for a market across from the Slow Bell. The Slow Bell is also preparing for the summer season with food, drinks, and live music. The town meeting will be held on Saturday, June 6, at 9:00 AM. Many thanks to the Finance Committee and Select Board for their extensive work on the budget.
Work has begun on the Stone Pier, where boring samples were recently collected. Thankfully, work has been completed on Chandler’s Wharf. Start planning those floats and golf carts! The theme of this year’s 4 th of July parade is The Pursuit of Happiness, as we celebrate 250 years of our country. Finally, Schoolhouse Seconds will begin accepting donations on June 1st. Proceeds go directly toward Council programs, including the Wellness Center and Fuel Assistance. Thank you for your continued support of the best shopping experience on Casco Bay!
