USD Academic Support Shaney Fink is in her second year as USD's Academic Support Coordinator. Last season the cumulative grade point average for the 2001-2002 academic year among the 16 women's and men's NCAA teams exceeded 3.0. Two seasons ago she was on the Torero volleyball coaching staff as a first year assistant, helping the Toreros to a 23-6 record and second round finish in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to USD she gained coaching experience at the high school, co ll ege and international levels for four years . She capped off a stellar collegiate career ( 1990-93) at Cal Berkeley and won selection to the All-Pac IO Decade Team.

Fink completed her B.A., graduating with honors in Social Science from Berkeley in 1994. She is currently working on a Masters Degree at USD in Counseling. Recently married, Shaney and her husband, Tom Vorkoper, reside in Del Mar.The USD Athletic Academic Support Program is designed to promote the academic develop– ment of student-athletes. The primary objective is to offer the necessary resources for the academic success of student-athletes as they work to earn their degree. Academic Support Services are designed to enhance the student-athl ete's overall collegiate experi ence and encourage development and attainment of academic and career goals. All USD student-athletes have access to advising, tutoring and mentoring services. The mentoring program, Access, was developed in 1999 and teams a graduate student in the Counseling program with an athlete who would like to enhance study skill s, learn about campus resources and receive guidance on goa l development and attainment. Student-athletes also have access to a quiet area where they can study or work in the computer center. In add iti on, student-athl etes are encouraged to utilize the campus learn ing centers including the Writing, Math and Logic Centers as well as to take advantage of the resources available to them in the Career Cen ter, Counseli ng Center and Computer Labs.

Torero Strength and Conditioning

The University of San Diego athletic department recognizes the need for all athletes of a ll sports to engage in a comprehensive strength and conditioning program. The USO strength and conditioning program has been designed to deve lop functiona l strength, speed, power and endurance. The development of these physical attributes is ineffective if the athletes are not ab le to carry them over to the playing fie ld. Adhering to a properl y designed program of strength training, conditioning and nutrition can enabl e our men and women to become the best poss ibl e athletes they can be, while simultaneously reducing the incidence of injury. The hea rt of the strength and conditioning program is th e Jenny Cra ig Pavilion fitne ss center (3,800 square fee t) and the USO Sports Center we ight room (5,000 square feet). Both weigh t rooms contain O lympic platforms, free-we ights , se lectorized machines, dumbbells and cardiovascular equipment, and are open exc lusively to student-ath letes at spec ifi c times each day. USO student-athl etes receive intensive instruction on proper weight tra ining tec hn iq ue; speed, power and agi lity developme nt; and sport-specific cond iti oning. Their strength and condit ioning programs are specific to th e nature of th eir sport or position. Each athl ete is indi vidua ll y monitored throughout their program to ensure the grea test chance of ath let ic progress.
