In 196 1, the Most Reverend Bishop Buddy, the fo unding fa ther of USO, announced that the school's nickname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping with the fri endl y relationship which exists between San Di ego and Mexico," Hi s Exce ll ency sa id at the time. Torero comes from the spani sh term toro, the bull , and from the word torear, to fi ght bulls. All of the contestants in the ri ng are ca lled toreros. Torero is a genera l term descri bi ng a bull fighter and signi fies co urage, honor and fid elity. USO student-athletes, li ke the Torero, represent a willing– ness to stand alone in the ring and accept the chall enge. The 2000-200 I schoo l year marked the 40th anni versary with Toreros as the official ni ckname fo r USO athl etic teams. What Is A Torero?
