Big is beautiful Welcome to the latest issue of Tube & Pipe Technology, which, at 224 pages, stands as one of our biggest ever special Düsseldorf issues. A very proud achievement for everyone connected to the magazine and hopefully one that reflects the increasing optimism in the industry as a whole. A sense of optimism that could not arrive at a better time, with whispers about the official end to the recession in the UK and elsewhere; the arrival of Spring in a particularly weather weary Europe; and, of course, the fantastic Tube Düsseldorf. For five days the event will turn the exhibition halls on the banks of the Rhine into a bustling meeting place for all the biggest manufacturers and buyers in the tube industry and as someone who was taken a back by the sheer scale of FABTECH in Chicago last year, it will be fascinating to see how an even larger and more well attended event takes shape. And the initial signs for it to be the best show ever are very promising. Interlinked drawing line for steel tubes

GULF International Pipe Industry (GIPI), which was established as a limited liability company in the Sultanate of Oman in January 2007, claims to be the first high- pressure carbon steel pipe mill to be setup in Oman, and also the first of its kind in the Arabian Gulf region to produce up to 24" ERW high-pressure pipes. The establishment of the pipe mill is in line with the aim of the Sultanate of Oman to reduce dependency on the import of finished products needed to service Oman’s strategic oil and gas sector. The ceremony for the mill took place in April 2008, and was attended by over 180 local and international dignitaries. Commercial production was scheduled to commence in January 2010, with a planned grand opening ceremony in March. The project was executed via EPC contracts with Milltech from South Korea undertaking the engineering, procurement, installation, testing and commissioning of all equipment, and JK Engineering handling the civil works. Other notable local contractor contributions were from MBM and Dawood Engineering. GIPI manufactures high grade carbon steel pipes and casing within a diameter range of 8" to 24", with capability for wall thickness of up to 25mm and pipe length of up to 18m. The pipe manufacturing process uses state-of-the-art fifth generation technology. The company is also equipped with coating facilities capable of both internal and three-layer external coating, and ASMAG, Austria, has finalised the commissioning of a new manufacturing line for steel tubes at Wiederholt GmbH in Germany. The new line allows an increase of output and a significant improvement of product quality. With a tube diameter of up to 125mm and a maximum length of 12m it represents the first interlinked production line of its kind in Germany. After passing a hydraulic in-line pointing press the steel tubes are drawn on a 1,200kN two-fold draw bench with rack and pinion drive. The newly developed multiple pre-bench allows permanent availability of three different plug rod dimensions. A head and tail sawing facility cuts both ends of the drawn tube and chips are removed by a newly designed integrated blow-off device.

With the 10 roll straightening machine RRM-pro 125/420/10 ASMAG has released a benchmarkingmachine for tube straightening. The customer’s straightness demands and even more challenging expectations are exceeded. Tubes are run end to end before undergoing ultrasonic and eddy current testing and being automatically separated. A newly developed multiple saw, consisting of four single saw units, allows automated positioning of each saw depending on specific requirements. After a final visual check the tubes are joined automatically in hexagonal shaped packages. The essential benefits of the new line are: material output can be increased significantly due to a high line speed and unstraightened tube ends are prevented.

Duo seal strategic cooperation deal KING-MAZON has announced it has successfully produced one of the biggest CNC cold pipe benders in the world with a maximum capability of tube OD 325mm x 27mm wall thickness. King Mazon’s research and development centres in China and Germany helped contribute to the successful delivery, and are dedicated to heavy duty tube bending research. King-Mazon’s heavy duty bender was specifically developed to target the shipbuilding and petrochemical industries, which have the requirement to bend large diameter tubes with heavy wall thicknesses. King-Mazon CNC heavy-duty bender adopts a PC based industrial computer utilising servo-motor control for feeding, angle rotation, and tooling changing. It also incorporates a 3D simulation function and interference checking function. In 2009 King-Mazon began its first mutual cooperation agreement by signing with Pines Technology in the USA. They will share the technology and the market together. Pines will get support from King- Mazon for the heavy duty pipe benders and King-Mazon will have support from Pines for the high precision tube benders for the aircraft and defense markets. This reduces the number of couplings needed and speeds up installation. The supply of tailor made pipe lengths also allows great flexibility in pipe laying. The lightweight pipes need no heavy installation equipment and their smooth inner surface guarantees low operation and maintenance costs. IN 1985, the Narmada Valley Development Authority, a multidisciplinary organisation of the Indian State Government, was given jurisdiction over the major water resources development projects in the Narmada region. With a length of more than 1,300km, the Narmada River passes through many Indian districts and is well known as the ‘Life Line’ of Madhya Pradesh. To support and develop regional agricultural development in Madhya Pradesh, the Indian government decided to utilise 18.25 MAF (million acre-feet) of water from the Narmada River to realise 29 major, 135 medium-sized and over 3,000 minor irrigation projects in this region. The Punasa Lift Irrigation Scheme is part of this development plan. In a first phase, to be completed in 2010, an irrigation network will be established to irrigate 3,500 hectares of land around the villages of Punasa and Mundi. The network plan, developed by the Narmada Valley Development Authority, includes existing open trench water channels as well as new irrigation lines. To avoid evaporation and to prevent erosion and water pollution through sewerage and pesticides, it was decided to install a closed pipeline system. The main requirements for the pipe system defined in the tender were easy installation and good corrosion resistance, as well as low operational and maintenance costs. In the end, Amiantit India, a supplier of Flowtite GRP pipes was awarded the contract to supply 21,000m of glass fibre reinforced plastic pipes (GRP) in diameters DN 600mm and DN 900mm with a pressure of PN 6 and a stiffness of 124 Kpa. The main reasons for this decision were the manufacturing method and the excellent product properties of

OMS to sample flow line pipe ends for Gumusut-Kakap oil field

development. OMS will provide assistance in the planning and execution of the creation of the J-lay double joints. This process will enable the most round pipes to be allocated to the more critical areas of the pipeline where they will be fitted together using a mixture of selection and rotation in order to provide the required fit up to less than 0.5mm that SCRs demand. Those pipes that are more difficult to fit together will be used in less critical areas. OMS will also advise Serimax on the most suitable dimensions of the J-lay collars for welding the pipe ends. This will ensure the easiest and best fit up of pipes offshore, where it is essential to minimise the time and costs of the pipe-laying vessel. The pipe laying installation contractor on the Gumusut-Kakap project is SapuraAcergy. OMS was awarded the contract from the welding contractor for the project, Serimax. Richard Gooch, director of technology at OMS commented: “OMS is delighted to be involved in such a high profile deepwater

UK-BASED measurement technology company Optical Metrology Services (OMS) Ltd has been awarded a contract to undertake dimensional measurement of pipes for the Gumusut- Kakap oil field installation, the first Shell deepwater project in Malaysia. The three-week project requires OMS to carry out critical analysis and sampling of around 3,500 pipe ends and seven different sizes of pipe. The pipe ends will be used for both steel catenary risers (SCRs) and flow lines. The Gumusut-Kakap field will be a semi-submersible floating production system (FPS) configured for the mild offshore environment North-West of Sabah, Malaysia, within the Indian Ocean. All wells are subsea, with oil and condensate exported via a pipeline to shore. In total, there will be 27 riser porches and 13 pull tubes on the Host FPS, of which 10 riser porches and five pull tubes have been allocated for the initial J and K field specialist

Newport firm’s pipe device scoops top UK awards

A HIGH-TECH Welsh company, which only started trading in 2007, has picked up two prestigious UK business awards. Abriox Ltd, based in Newport, South Wales, won the British Chambers of Commerce’s Most Promising Start-up Business Award, sponsored by BT, and the Award for Achievement in International Business for its innovative fuel pipeline monitoring equipment. The system then identifies potential corrosion problems wherever and whenever they occur and alerts the operator immediately. Before Merlin, this kind of service could only be done manually in the field and was costly and time-consuming. Merlin is now used in the UK by gas distribution companies like National Grid and Wales & West Utilities as well as by petrol firms like Esso, BPA and Fina. The system has also been taken up widely in the US and the Middle East by crude oil firms. John Dunsmure, managing director of the British Chambers of Commerce said: “This is an innovative small company, and although it’s only been going for a couple of years, has already shown its big ambitions both in the UK and internationally. “In just two years of trading the company already has every major UK gas distribution company as its

customer. The fact that it picked up two national awards speaks for itself.” Abriox founders spent two years developing their unique product, funded by development grants from WAG’s SMARTCymru R & D programme, before they took it to market in 2007. Since then the business, which still only has eight employees, has improved profitability year-on-year and this year had an order book with more than £1.5m worth of deliveries in it, with a five-year objective to achieve a turnover of between £10m and £15m. UAE’s largest pre-insulated pipe manufacturing facility

HRH the Crown Prince of Denmark, Frederik and HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum have inaugurated the Empower-Logstor insulated pipes systems (ELIPS), UAE’s largest pre-insulated pipe manufacturing facility, in Jebel Ali. ELIPS is a joint venture between Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the UAE’s leading district cooling company and Logstar, the world’s largest manufacturer of pre-insulated pipes. The $25mn facility will cater for the requirements of district cooling services and oil and gas across the Middle East. ELIPS will ensure high quality of insulation and casing of pipes, enhancing efficiency and maintenance costs of district cooling systems services. It will also ensure price control by improving supply chain and eliminating artificial price fluctuations created by various players due to the demand-supply gap, Bin Shafar said. Preben Tolstrup, CEO of Logstor, which owns a 49% stake in ELIPS, said: “We are the world’s leading pre-insulated pipe manufacturer with more than 50 years of experience and 10 factories worldwide, serving customers in more than 50 countries. With the prime purpose of supplying top quality district cooling pipe systems to the entire region, the world’s most advanced technology introduced at this new plant will set the standards for many years ahead.” Preben Tolstrup commented: “Logstor aims is to serve the Gulf region through Dubai, which has strong infrastructure and logistical connectivity.” Bin Shafar said: “ELIPS will also specialise in and supply pre-insulated pipes to the oil and gas sector as well as district cooling. cost of pre-insulated pipes for its various projects.” Depending on dimensions and output, from 100 to 300 pipe joints a day can be produced and the ELIPS factory will offer job opportunities for a wide range of competences, from operators to highly skilled engineers within sales, engineering and production technologies. ELIPS is using spray technology for manufacturing large diameter pre-insulated pipes, which will ensure high quality products

and result in savings in raw material costs as compared to traditional injection technology. ELIPS aims to make major contribution to green environment as its technology helps lower CO 2 emissions. Sikora AG extends headquarters

New premises acquired by UK pipe company

SIKORA AG is expanding its headquarters in Germany in response to a growth in business in the last few years. With the extension of one of the existing three buildings by three storeys, the company also aims to provide more space for future developments. The start of construction is scheduled for spring 2010. In 2007, Sikora extended its headquarters by adding a new building for research, development and service. This new building will now be extended by three storeys. Sikora sees further growth opportunities in the international market,

and the new building will be utilised to support this growth. Specifically in emerging markets where the expansion of the power network is extensive, Sikora forecasts particularly strong growth. Currently Sikora has more than 600 X-ray measuring systems, which are used for the production of energy cables, installed worldwide.

UK specialist pipe coupling manufacturer Teekay Couplings has recently acquired new premises in Milton Keynes, UK, increasing current manufacturing floor space by 80%. The new premises will accommodate final assembly, production testing and despatch departments and will include storage facilities suitable for housing a stock in excess of 20,000 pipe couplings. According to joint MD Ian Webb, the new acquisition meets the expanding global business potential in five key sectors – marine, water, civil engineering, building services and industrial.
