5th Grade Math Scope & Sequence
End of Unit Competency
By the end of Topic 13 students will be able to justify how the value of a numerical expression is found.
Language Functions and Features: Describe data and/or steps to solve problems using:
● Mathematical terms ( evaluate, value, interpret, reason, expression, equation, parentheses, brackets, order of operations ) ● Visuals to support approach and/or solution (table, coordinate grid) and statements to present processes (eg. The table can help you fnd the missing value by following the rule…) Evaluate others’ arguments using: ● Conditional clauses (if/then) to justify conclusions (eg. If you use the rules “add 3” and “add 4”...) ● Relating verbs (have, belong to) to make a claim (eg. The value of Expression A compares to the value of Expression B because..) ● Technical nouns, defnitions, patterns, or rules to provide details (eg. The relationship between the ordered pair is…) ● Declarative statements to disagree/debate (I agree, I disagree, I did it differently) and state a conclusion (eg. The value of the expression is… )
