At this Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Annual Assembly of the International Institute of Welding (IIW), hosted by the Indonesian Welding Society, IIW is honouring the winners of this year’s pres- tigious IIW Awards and acknowledging their significant contri- butions to welding and joining around the world. IIW Awards recognise a wide range of achievements such as outstanding technical accomplishments and contributions to IIW Working Units, illustrious careers in the industry or acade- mia, contributions to global advancement and meritorious ser- vice to the IIW. We are proud to promote and recognise excellence through the prizes, often sponsored by Member Societies, many of which are named to pay tribute to eminent individuals who played signi- ficant roles in the history of our welding industry and Institute.

These eminent individuals were founding fathers, or champions of IIW’s Mission and Goals, or made significant contributions to the development of revolutionary scientific and technical advances in welding and allied processes. It was the dedication and vision of these famous IIW personalities which set the stage for the organisation to be recognised today as the largest and most prestigious worldwide network for knowledge exchange of joining technologies. Our congratulations go to the 2018 IIW Award winners who have each made their own mark on IIW’s history through their achievements, professionalism and enthusiastic participation in global welding cooperation.

WALTER EDSTRÖM MEDAL Sponsored by the Swedish Delegation

Lauds an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and contributions to the advancement of the IIW as an organisation.

Dr Damian J. Kotecki (USA) was awarded a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Metallurgical Engineering by the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1970. His professional career was mainly devoted to research and development in welding filler metals at Teledyne McKay and then at The Lincoln Electric Company. He held various offices in the American Welding Society (AWS) including President 2005-2006, and is a Fellow of AWS. He was US Delegate to ISO/TC 44/SC 3 Welding Consumables from 1987 to 2005. Kotecki joined IIW Commission II Arc Welding and Filler Metals in 1978 and served as Chair from 1990 to 2003, continuing to participate to the present. He was active in Sub- commission IX-H Weldability of Stainless Steels and Nickel-base Alloys as well over the same time period. He served on the IIW Board of Directors as Member, Vice President, and then Treasurer and is a Fellow of IIW. Throughout his 40 years of involvement with IIW, Kotecki has actively demonstrated his commitment to the Mission and Goals of IIW through numerous roles at all levels of governance and strategic development. His discerning and collaborative approach has helped to advance the Institute in many spheres, while his convivial persona- lity has enriched all aspects of his work.

FELLOW OF IIW Recognises individuals with a minimum of 10 years active participation in IIW who have made distinguished contributions to welding science and technology and promoted and sustained the professional stature of the field.

Dr Stan A. David (USA) received his PhD in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He held roles as Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, Colo- rado School of Mines, and Coventry University, UK. He joined the Oak Ridge Natio- nal Laboratory in 1977, and remains a Corporate Fellow Emeritus and consultant after retirement in 2008. David is a Fellow of The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (TMS), American Asso- ciation for the Advancement of Science, ASM International and the AWS, and recipient of several major awards including the IIW Arata Prize, Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Pittsburgh, and the Elegant Work Prize of the Institute of Materials, London, for his publications on single crystal welding. In 1994 he was the recipient of the Champion H. Mathewson award from TMS and in 1981 the AWS Lincoln Gold Medal. David contributed to over 300 papers in the fields of solidification and welding metal- lurgy, is editor of 10 international conference proceedings and is actively involved in the publication of a major journal in materials joining.

Dr Zhili Feng (USA) leads the Materials Joining team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. There he manages multidisciplinary projects and major multi-million-dollar fundamental and applied R&D and technology innovations to advance materials joining and manufac- turing science and technologies for automotive, nuclear energy, fossil energy, hydrogen energy, and defence applications. Feng has made seminal contributions in several important areas such as integrated com- putational welding engineering (ICWE), proactive weld residual stress control, innova- tions in materials joining including friction stir welding/processing and solid state dissi- milar material joining. He has also made significant contributions in the application of advanced neutron and synchrotron scattering tools to study the fundamentals of weld microstructure evolution and effects on weld properties and performance of welded structures. Additionally, Feng is Joint Faculty Professor of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Guest Professor of Tsinghua University, P.R. China. Feng, a Fellow of AWS, has over 200 publications and holds nine patents. In 2015 he received special recognition from the US Department of Energy for his leadership in developing technology solutions to use advanced high-strength steels in auto-body components.

FELLOW OF IIW

Dr Stephen Liu (USA) holds the American Bureau of Shipping Chair Professorship at Colorado School of Mines (CSM). He received BS and MS degrees in Metallurgical Engineering from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil) and his PhD degree from CSM. Liu worked previously as a steel metallurgist and Assistant Professor in Manufacturing at the Pennsylvania State University. Liu has received many prestigious honours including the Adams Lecture Award, Savage Award, Spraragen Award, McKay-Helm Award, Peaslee Award, Jennings Award, and IIW Jaeger Lecture and Halil Kaya Gedik Awards, amongst others. In 2015 he received the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Oil and Gas Engineering Award. He was elected Fellow of the AWS in 1978 for his ability to bring clarity to complicated concepts and as a leading expert in the field of welding and weld metallurgy. He is also a Fellow of ASME, ASM and the Institute of Materials, Mining and Minerals, and a Chartered Professional Engineer. Liu has served as US Delegate to IIW Commission XVII Brazing, Soldering and Diffu- sion Bonding, and participated in several other Working Units.

Outstanding accomplishments by Mr Chris Smallbone (Australia) have generated techni- cal, economic and social impacts which have significantly advanced the science, techno- logy and application of welding around the world. Through his unique and pioneering innovations he led the successful growth of the national welding institutes in two countries, both South Africa (SAIW) (1978-1993) and Australia (WTIA) (1995-2013), to world-class standards. In parallel, he worked voluntarily to build up other successful not-for-profit industry organisations to meet South African and Austra- lian needs in technology transfer, NDT, pressure equipment, skills, qualification and certi- fication, and professional development. Smallbone’s extensive voluntary work in leadership roles across all facets of IIW since 1974 has helped improve the quality of life of people globally, for example through IIWWorking Group Regional Activities and the inception and implementation of the IIW WeldCare Programme. He is an IIW Past-President (2005-2008) and recipient of prestigious welding industry awards, honours and fellowships from many countries and organisations including the IIW Walter Edström Medal for ‘his remarkable and distinguished contributions to the IIW and the international community’.

ARTHUR SMITH AWARD Sponsored by the United Kingdom Delegation

Conferred upon an individual who, over numerous years, has given dedicated service to the objectives of IIW, particularly in the work of the Commissions.

Dr Patrick W. Hochanadel (USA) of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) received BS, MS and PhD degrees in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines under the guidance of Prof. Glen Edwards. He began working at LANL in 1997 as a Staff Scientist. His research interests include electron beam welding, laser beam welding, and additive manufacturing. Hochanadel has co-authored numerous publications and contributed to the AWS Welding Handbook and ASM Metals Handbook, Volume 6A, in both electron beam welding and laser beam welding. He has served in various leadership roles for the AWS Committee on High Energy Beam Welding and on the Technical Papers Committee for nearly 20 years. Hochanadel is a member of the Editorial Board as an Associate Editor for the IIW Journal Welding in the World and has served as US Delegate to Commission IV Power Beam Processes for several years.

IIW REGIONAL ACTIVITIES AWARD Sponsored by the IIW

Conferred on an outstanding individual who has made a significant contribution to improving the global quality of life through optimum use and innovation of welding and joining technologies in their region or internationally.

Dr-Ing. Vencislav Grabulov (Serbia) has been a driving force for the promotion of wel- ding technology and, through this, the improvement of quality of life in Serbia and the South-East European Region. His work created bonding and much stronger regional coo- peration between the welding societies of the ex-Yugoslavia states. He was the President of the Serbian Welding Society (1998-2010), Chief Executive of the Serbian Authorised Nominated Body (ANB) from its foundation and has represented Serbia in various capacities in IIW activities since 1981 (Commissions IX, X, XIV, IAB members, IAB Working Groups A & B, WG-RA). Grabulov, who teaches welding engineering at the University of Belgrade, is author of more than 200 conference papers and publications in leading journals. From 2003, toge- ther with colleagues from regional countries, he has been intimately involved in orga- nising three successful IIW International Congresses and many regional workshops and conferences, and the establishment and growth of the very successful South-East Euro- pean Network (SEENET) for welding technology transfer.

THOMAS MEDAL Sponsored by the American Welding Society

Rewards an individual who has been involved in IIW/ISO international standards activities and can deliver a lecture on the incorporation of global studies into the standardisation for welding technologies.

Mr Jérôme Dietsch (France) started his career in 2005 as an Information Manager for Institut de Soudure Groupe – the French Welding Institute. While his academic back- ground did not destine him specifically to the field of welding, his curiosity and com- mitment in his work allowed him to acquire by experience a very large and consistent overview of most aspects of welding technologies. An active member of IIW Commission VI Terminology since 2008, from 2013 Dietsch became more and more involved in standardisation activities. He has been the French Delegate not only to the IIW Working Group on Standardisation but also to a number of CEN and ISO Technical Committees, Subcommittees and Working Groups, including those dealing with welding consumables, health and safety, quality management and personnel qualification. His main area of interest remains in welding terminology, which has led him to become the new Chair of ISO/TC 44/SC 7 Representation and Terms, since the beginning of 2018.

YOSHIAKI ARATA AWARD Sponsored by the Japanese Delegation

To an individual whose extraordinary achievements in fundamental research in welding-related science and technology have been recognised as significant contributions to the progress of welding engineering.

Professor Yoshinori Hirata (Japan) graduated from the Welding Department in the School of Engineering, Osaka University in 1974. After completion of the Master’s programme, he worked as a welding engineer for pressure vessel production at the Hitachi Zosen Corporation. He then returned to Osaka University where he engaged in education and research on the physics of materials processing until 2016. Hirata has dedicated himself to the understanding of welding phenomena associated with gas shielded arc welding processes in order to realise reliable welding quality with high productivity. He has conducted outstanding research on arc plasma, metal transfer and weld pool phenomena, which have significantly impacted the evolution of practical arc welding processes. Hirata has contributed greatly to IIW activities as the 2006-2011 Chair of Study Group 212 Physics of Welding, as an IIW Technical Management Board member 2008-2011 and IIW Board Director 2013-2015, and as the Chair of IIW Commission XII Arc Welding Processes and Production Systems from 2011 to 2017.

University Professor Dr-Ing. Uwe Reisgen (Germany) studied Mechanical Engineering at Aachen University (RWTH), Germany, becoming a European Welding Engineer in 1990. He received a doctorate at the ISF Welding and Joining Institute of RWTH in 1995. Since 2008 he has been the Head of the RWTH ISF Welding and Joining Institute, and Managing Director of the Centre of Excellence in Joining and the Research Centre Jülich. He has published nearly 250 research articles and currently supervises projects on preci- sion melt engineering, welding of steel and cooling time in steel arc welds. Areas of his expertise include materials characterisation and processing, friction stir and laser wel- ding, and the innovative joining of advanced materials including light metals, titanium alloys, composite steels and ceramics. Reisgen has been a member of the Directorate of the DVS (German Welding Society) Committee for Technical Guidelines since 2013 and the DVS Presidium since 2016. He is the German Delegate to IIW Commission C-II Arc Welding Processes and Production Systems and has contributed significantly to its work since 2008.

HALIL KAYA GEDIK AWARD Sponsored by the Turkish Delegation

Recognises a scientist or engineer’s significant contributions to the advancement welding science and technology. CATEGORY A – The Development of Consumables

Mr Deok-Sang Yoo (Republic of Korea), a Senior Welding Engineer, was a Representative Director of ESAB SeAH Corporation for eight years and is currently CEO of SEUN MPC in Changwon, Korea. He holds a Bachelor Degree of Naval Architecture and Master Degree of Welding from Pusan National University, Busan, South Korea as well as an Executive MBA Degree from Helsinki Aalto University, Finland. He commenced his career as a Welding Engineer in the Korea Shipbuilding and Engineering Corporation (now Hanjin Heavy Industries) building and repairing commercial ships, barges, and lighters, before moving to ESAB SeAH Corporation and becoming the CEO and Director of the Welding Research Institute, which pioneered the production of flux cored welding wire in Korea. In his role at the Welding Research Institute, and as an ESAB Representative Director, Yoo contributed to enhancing Korea’s industrial competitiveness in heavy indus- tries such as shipbuilding and construction, particularly with the development of high performance welding materials and new manufacturing technology utilising seamless flux cored with low hydrogen, zero moisture absorption and less cold cracking.

2018 AWARDS FOR OUTSTANDING TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT

Dr Yosuke Ogino (Japan) obtained his PhD from Osaka University in Japan in 2014. He has been an Assistant Professor in the Division of Materials and Manufacturing Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University since 2015. His main research topic is the numerical simulation of welding phenomena, in particular the numerical simulation of the heat source of the gas metal arc welding process, including interactions between the arc plasma and metal transfer phenomena. This work has enabled the detailed visualisation of the behaviour and properties of heat sources. Ogino has given many presentations and published papers about numerical simulation of the arc welding process, and received awards from the JapanWelding Society. The winning paper was recommended for publication in Welding in the World by IIW Study Group 212 Physics of Welding.

Rewards a young professional or student for a paper devoted to research into welding and related technologies.

CATEGORY A – Joining and Fabrication Technology

Dr Jinle Zeng ‘Research on machine vision detection method for real-time path control in wirefeed additive manufacturing and multi-pass/multi-layer welding process’

Dr Jinle Zeng (People’s Republic of China) graduated from Tsinghua University in 2017 and received his PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering. His research field was seam tracking technology, using multiple visual feature acquisition and information fusion methodology, which can be applied in automatic welding using welding robots. There were two main topics of his dissertation research. Firstly, automatic narrow butt joint detection methodology in specular reflection workpieces which is used in the aeros- pace field. Secondly, multi-layer/multi-pass weld position recognition methodology for thick workpieces which is used in the energy and marine engineering fields. Based on his PhD research, he has published five SCIE-indexed and three EI-indexed papers as the first author. He has also been granted nine Chinese invention patents and one Japanese invention patent, and has applied for a US invention patent. Currently Zeng is dedicated to research on smart manufacturing, including ‘Internet of Things’ technology, big data analysis, and industrial cloud platforms.

CATEGORY B – Materials Behaviour and Weldability

Dr-Ing. Peer Woizeschke ‘Interfacial analysis of laser joined hybrid aluminum titanium seams in the submicrometer range’

Dr-Ing. Peer Woizeschke (Germany) studied production engineering at the University of Bremen and received his first degree with distinction in 2010. He then joined the Materials Processing and Processing Systems unit under Prof. Frank Vollertsen at BIAS, the Institute of Applied Beam Technology, in Bremen. He received his doctorate from the University of Bremen’s Faculty of Production Engineering in 2017. His early work dealt with deep penetration laser welding of aluminium sheets in the macro- and micro-range. Subsequently, he focused on laser joining of hybrid seams for multi-material designs with aluminium, titanium, steel, and carbon fibre reinforced plas- tic components, and since 2014 has led the Joining for Lightweight Construction Group. Woizeschke has regularly attended IIW meetings as part of the DVS Young Professional Programme, focusing on Commissions C-IV and C-XVII. He has published five peer- reviewed journal papers and 15 conference contributions, articles, or book chapters as lead author as well as a further 18 publications as co-author.

HENRY GRANJON PRIZE

CATEGORY C – Design and Structural Integrity Dr Kyle Tousignant ‘Fillet welds around circular hollow sections’

Dr Kyle Tousignant (Canada) earned his Bachelor and PhD degrees from the Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto, Canada. His PhD research on weld design for hollow structural section joints has been widely published and has influenced the development of American and Canadian steel design codes (AISC 360 Specification for Steel Structures and CSA S16 Design of Steel Structures). In 2014, he earned the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship, which funded industry experience with Blackwell Structural Engineers, one of the only engineering firms in Canada to work in tensile (fabric) structures. He has since earned several awards from the James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation for his research. Tousignant completed his PhD in 2017. He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto. His current research interests include steel connection design and weld fracture modelling using the finite element method.
