 Welcome 

Dear Guests,

World Congress Attendees,

The Santa Gertrudis Breeders International would like to extend a warm welcome to all who are joining us for the Santa Gertrudis World Congress 2019. We greatly appreciate your participation. We know this is a substantial investment of your time and money, and we hope the program we have put together will meet and/ or exceed your expectations. The next 17 days will give producers an overview of how the Santa Gertrudis breed is thriving in our country. We have tried to balance our agenda with ranch tours and educational workshops, as well as time to enjoy some of the cultural highlights in the areas we visit. We have a lot packed into a few short weeks! We hope it will be an opportunity not only to learn more about our breed in the United States and the cattle industry in general, but also to develop and grow friendships and collaborations between those of us who share a passion for this breed of red cattle. I would like to thank our SGBI Executive Director John Ford for his guidance and vision for the Santa Gertrudis breed and for helping us put together this World Congress and the Growing Globally Seminar. Also, the BluePrint Media team, headed by Lisa Bard and Judy McDaniel, have put many hours of hard work into making this an event to remember! Once again, thank YOU for taking time from your busy schedules to join us here in the United States. I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you as we GROW GLOBALLY and celebrate the Santa Gertrudis breed.

On behalf of Santa Gertrudis Breeders International, welcome to the Santa Gertrudis World Congress 2019. Membership is excited that you are joining us for 17 days of everything Santa Gertrudis. In an industry that is constantly changing and evolving, our breed has the attention of cattle producers worldwide. Regardless of location, Santa Gertrudis cattle perform profitably, even in the most challenging environmental conditions. In 2013, Santa Gertrudis Breeders International became the first beef breed association in the world to adopt single-step methodology for incorporating DNA into the breed’s genetic evaluation. Adopting this cutting- edge technology has made Santa Gertrudis the first Bos indicus -influenced breed to offer members and commercial customers genomic-enhanced EPDs, creating higher prediction accuracies for younger animals and characterizing genetics for traits where it is difficult to collect phenotypes. SGBI is proud to be a U.S. beef industry leader in genetic technology, producing cattle that are profitable for all industry sectors. Over the next two weeks, membership will be showcasing the results of the association’s DNA-verified genetic evaluation. SGBI members look forward to discussing opportunities that will expand the breed’s global footprint, increase market share and strengthen association relationships around the world. We are glad you have joined us and are ready to GROW GLOBALLY.

Sincerely,

Truly,

John Ford Executive Director Santa Gertrudis Breeders International

Santa Gertrudis World Congress 2019 • GROWING GLOBALLY

WORLD CONGRESS 4-19 OCTOBER | GROWING GLOBALLY USA Santa Gertrudis 2019

 Ranch Host Profiles 

Quail Valley Farms Blountsville, Alabama

Tinney Farms is also a proud founding member of the Tinney Farms Gain Test. Tinney Farms Manager Arlin Taylor played a key role in organizing the bull data collection program focused on serving Santa Gertrudis Breeders International (SGBI) members in the Southeast. Today, participation in the program includes SGBI members from across the country, and the program is designed to grow demand for Santa Gertrudis bulls nationwide. Grandview Farms Haleyville, Alabama Delmo and Wilmuth Payne, Owners delmo.payne@gmail.com In 1983, Delmo Payne purchased a herd of Santa Gertrudis cattle from Anne Upchurch of Grey Rocks Ranch and started Grandview Farms. Over time, he purchased four different ranch locations in which his herd grew to 300 cows – 200 purebred and 100 commercial and recipient cows. Payne sells about 70 percent of his progeny to seedstock producers and 30 percent to commercial producers. Improving the genetics and expected progeny differences (EPDs) of his cattle has been one of Payne’s goals. With the help of his ranch manager, Brent Shaw, and herdsman, Seth Holmes, he has been using artificial insemination for many years and started embryo transfer over the last few years. More recently, Payne has found in-vitro fertilization technology to work well. Traits in the Santa Gertrudis breed that Payne is breeding for are low birthweight bulls, good weaning and yearling weights, total maternal traits from the female and high marbling numbers for terminal animals. Grandview Farms places a great deal of emphasis on quality characteristics like natural muscling and structural correctness. Breeding for these traits has paid off, as Grandview Farms has produced many show winners, including multiple national champions. Located in northwest Alabama, Grandview Farms borders Mississippi, an area not considered to be a big cattle county because a large percentage of the county is woodland. With an average 59 inches of annual rainfall and the best deep soils in the county in these river bottom areas, they are in an environment very conducive to growing grass.

Ricky Cleveland, Owner • ricky@xcelmasonry.com Over the course of the last four years, Quail Valley Farms has worked to integrate reproductive technologies through its embryo program to push the boundaries of the Santa Gertrudis breed. The Blountsville, Ala., operation started in 2015 with 10 Santa Gertrudis cows. Today, the purebred operation has grown to more than 700 head. A strong embryo program has been a priority for Quail Valley Farms since the start. Currently, they run 300 recipient cows and, last year, they put in approximately 700 embryos. Owner Ricky Cleveland and his team have goals to grow to 1,000 head of purebred cattle, utilizing 100 percent artificial insemination. Located among the rolling hills of northern Alabama, the operation’s forage base is native fescue with some improved pastures on rye grass, clovers and legumes. The annual rainfall varies from 55 to 60 inches per year, and the annual temperatures range from the mid-to-high 90s in the summer to lows around the 30s in the winter. Summers are hot and humid and winters are cool and wet. Tinney Farms Hanceville, Alabama Arlin Taylor, Manager • arlin.taylor@bhamfast.com Tinney Farms was established in 1980 by the late Howard Tinney, who passed away in 2013. Tinney’s quest to put together an outstanding group of cattle to establish the Tinney Farms cow herd took him all over the Southeast; he even expanded his search into Texas. Tinney believed the show ring could be used as a great marketing tool and, since 1992, Tinney Farms has had 12 national champion Santa Gertrudis bulls and females. But the success doesn’t stop there. The operation has also had multiple winners in various gain tests, and won ranch- to-rail awards for highest average daily gain and feed efficiency. Commercial breeders throughout the Southeast depend on Tinney Farms for Santa Gertrudis bulls and females as the building blocks for their crossbred herds and STAR 5 programs.

GROWING GLOBALLY • Santa Gertrudis World Congress 2019

Cotton Branch Plantation Smithdale, Mississippi Ryan Cowart, Manager • rcowart@cottonbranch.com The Cotton Branch Plantation, a cattle ranch nestled among peaceful cottonwood meadows, was founded in southwestern Mississippi in 1990. The operation first purchased Santa Gertrudis cattle in 1995 and, today, 120 cows graze the operation’s rolling hills. The operation is primed for growth and they aim to cap the herd at 250-300 cows. The breeding program has been built around its foundation herd sire, Grizzly 3308. The foundation females came from Ben Alexander’s Christmas Line. Bull calves that make the grade participate in a 112-day gain test, which begins 30 days after weaning. The calves are limit fed a 12-percent protein ration twice daily, and they aim for 3-3.5 pounds of gain per day. To date, bulls have consistently gained 3.25-5 pounds per day. Following the gain test, bulls undergo ultrasound, have semen tested and scrotal measurements taken. Any bull that fails a test requirement is sent to the sale barn or harvest plant. Fertility is a priority for Cotton Branch. To stay in the herd, females must get bred, raise a quality calf and re-breed in a timely manner. Heifer calves are fed a growing ration until 12 months of age, and then they are put on a high- quality, year-round forage program for as long as they are in production on the ranch. Bahia grass is the main summer grazing forage and winter annuals such as wheat or rye mixes are used for winter grazing. Wiley Ranch Deville, Louisiana Kim and Erik Wiley, Owners • erikkeri@yahoo.com Wiley Ranch is a father and son team of Kim and Erik Wiley, who began their Santa Gertrudis herd in 2009 with two heifers fromWendt Ranches. The herd has now increased to 250 head and continues to grow. As the data/genetic trend progressed, Wiley Ranch managed to shift their herd traits to meet the ever- emerging market. They are now the largest Santa Gertrudis breeders in Louisiana and have set personal benchmarks to ensure they fit the breed’s Data Driven/Profit Proven image. In an effort to broaden their foreign interest, they’ve recently partnered with Australia’s Gyranda Ranch on a trait-leading bull from Red Doc Farm. In addition, they sold a bull to breeders in Bangladesh. They are committed to continue improving herd traits with every purchase they make. They also farm 7,000 acres of row crops and will bring a unique dual perspective of cattle production and farming to the tour.

King Ranch ® Kingsville, Texas Tylor Braden, Area Manager – Cattle Operations TBraden@king-ranch.com Founded in 1853, King Ranch developed the Santa Gertrudis breed of cattle in the 1920s in response to a need to have cattle that could perform in the challenging South Texas environment. Since the breed was recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1940, the King Ranch has continued to breed and develop Santa Gertrudis cattle, using them as seedstock for their commercial cattle operations. The ranch’s purebred Santa Gertrudis herd is comprised of approximately 1,100 animals. Today, King Ranch is one of the few operations that conducts within-herd EPD calculations, enabling them to continuously upgrade and improve its purebred Santa Gertrudis herd. Through the years, King Ranch geneticists and breeding specialists have made certain that the progression of the King Ranch Santa Gertrudis herd continues to produce the most profitable cattle for the harsh South Texas environment while not compromising fertility, efficiency or carcass quality as they compete against an ever-improving national supply. Summer heat indexes routinely exceed 115 degrees Fahrenheit. The annual rainfall is 28 inches, but regularly varies from 12 to 50 inches. This incredible variation is among the operation’s most difficult aspects to manage, with annual carrying capacity fluctuations potentially exceeding 10,000 animal units. King Ranch maintains a systems approach to management that ensures ecological, economical and generational sustainability by balancing the needs of livestock, wildlife, range and water resources.  San Jose Cattle Company Riviera, Texas Felix Serna, Director • fserna@elcoyote.com The registered livestock operations of San Jose Cattle Company, along with El Coyote and La Paloma Ranches, combine the origins of the ranching tradition with today’s technology to make the past come alive. The goal is to keep the ranch brands synonymous with top-quality cattle, whether it be Santa Gertrudis or Texas Longhorn. By producing functional cattle bred in the old tradition using today’s ideas and technology, the operation has produced cattle that have been competitive and productive in the pastures as well as the show ring. The land that makes up San Jose Cattle Company is situated in a diverse area along the coastal bend of South Texas. It’s a semi-arid region known as the Wild Horse Desert. Although in an annual rainfall belt of 24-26 inches, the area does not consistently get ample moisture. Despite frequently arid conditions, the ranches are teeming with wildlife that is intensively managed. To avoid degradation of the habitat, the ranches use a prescribed course of burning, brush control, rotational grazing and supplemental feeding, as well as create water sources while monitoring and controlling the population of cattle and wildlife.

Townsend Cattle Company Louise, Texas Ivan and Debbie Townsend, Owners townsendcattle81@gmail.com

Wendt Ranches Bay City, Texas Gene & Nancy Kubecka and Daniel & Lauren Kubecka, Owners • wendtranches@hotmail.com Dan Wendt and his father, R A., established SGBI Herd No. 621 in 1954. In 1969, the partnership changed to Dan and his wife, Jane, who passed away in 2016. In 2016, Dan and Jane sold the herd to Nancy [Wendt] and Gene Kubecka and their son, Daniel, and his wife, Lauren, who are the fourth generation to operate Wendt Ranches. Daughter Jenna and her husband, Jonathan Sneed, provide communication and legal consulting. The purchase and use of performance-tested bulls provided the foundation for their Santa Gertrudis breeding program. Since the inception of their breeding program, the family has collected and used data, and maintained and utilized comprehensive performance records and feedlot information. They have kept thorough performance records since 1954, which promotes confident choices regarding the direction of their herd. Strict culling programs are enforced to produce herd sires and an elite mother cow herd. Genomic testing and a robust AI program accelerates the realization of key performance targets. Wendt Ranches is known for producing and selling quality females, and has also produced some of the breed’s big herd sires, including Superman and Crackerjack. Wendt Ranches Santa Gertrudis cattle can be found around the nation and in more than 10 countries across the world. Texas A&M University (TAMU) is hosting Santa Gertrudis Beef University on the Texas A&M Campus, Oct. 16-17, as part of Santa Gertrudis World Congress 2019. The two-day seminar will feature presentations from TAMU faculty G.C. Lamb, Head, Department of Animal Sciences; Dan Hale, Ph.D., and Davey Griffin, Ph.D., Extension meat specialists; Reinaldo Cooke, Ph.D., International Beef Academy director; Ron Gill, Ph.D., associate department head; Andy Herring, Ph.D., animal breeding and genetics professor. Over the course of the program, participants will follow Santa Gertrudis steers from feeder calf to boxed beef. Data from these steers will be used to discuss factors that impact cattle value. Participants will learn how they can make genetic improvement in their herds with respect to growth and carcass traits. For more information on Texas A&M University Department of Animal Sciences, go to https://animalscience.tamu.edu/.  Santa Gertrudis  Beef University at TAMU

The Townsend family became involved with Santa Gertrudis in the early 1990s through Ivan and Debbie’s daughters, Tanya and Tana, who participated in the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Association. Townsend Cattle Company was established shortly after. Townsend Cattle Company is proud of its 2012 purchase of RDF Sancho’s Never Before 1136. Known as the “breakout sire for the breed,” he was considered the most consistent herd sire in breed history. His consistent, predictable offspring will carry on his legacy as a breed changer. Townsend’s herd is 100 percent DNA tested, and they utilize an extensive embryo transplant program with a select number of elite donor cows, using artificial insemination and natural service sires. While EPDs are integral in their breeding process, cattle must also have phenotypic correctness. Located in the heart of the Texas Gulf Coast, they utilize native Bermuda grass and hybrid Jiggs Bermuda planted during the spring, summer and fall. In the winter, cattle graze ryegrass and oats and are supplemented with hay. Hosting World Congress attendees at Townsend Cattle Company are fellow Santa Gertrudis breeders Buena Vida Cattle Company, Borchers Southern Y Ranches, L.P., Corporron Acres, 4-J Cattle, Pinnacle Cattle Company, Red Doc Farm, Woman Hollerin Ranch andWunderlich Farms. We want our World Congress guests to learn more about these breeders during their visit. Urbanosky Ranch Plantersville, Texas Jerome Urbanosky, Owner • jerome@ameritechsi.com Urbanosky Ranches was founded in 1969 when Jerome Urbanosky purchased his first Santa Gertrudis heifer at the age of 15. Today, Urbanosky Ranches remains dedicated to producing high-quality seedstock for purebred and commercial cattlemen. Urbanosky T6-22 was the ranch’s foundation herd bull for many years, creating the Urbanosky polled cattle that have achieved success in the show and sale ring. Their herd sire Bulletproof 4-30 is from this bloodline. Today, the current SGBI president and his wife, Jane, ranch near Plantersville, Texas, where they raise more than 200 Santa Gertrudis cows. The couple, along with their four children and grandchildren, who all live within five minutes of the ranch, are dedicated to producing high- quality Santa Gertrudis cattle. The operation is the first Santa Gertrudis ranch to have a cloned Santa Gertrudis, offer sexed female semen and have an online production sale.

Alabama Connection Sale Blountsville, Alabama Saturday, Oct. 5

Briscoe Western Art Museum San Antonio, Texas Sunday, Oct. 13

This fall marks the 31st annual Alabama Connection Sale. Grandview Farms, Hamilton, Ala.; Tinney Farms, Hanceville, Ala.; Grey Oaks Farm, Russellville, Ala.; and Quail Valley Farms, Oneonta, Ala., are excited to welcome Santa Gertrudis World Congress 2019 attendees. In addition to marking more than three decades since the start of this impressive sale, this year’s sale is also iconic because it is the Santa Gertrudis breed’s first 100-percent DNA-genotyped sale. The operations have worked diligently to provide buyers with the most data possible, including all EPDs, scan data and performance records for bull consignments. Along with 80 registered females and 50 data-proven bulls, the Connection group will also offer 50 Santa Gertrudis-influenced crossbred females. Tinney Farms and Grandview Farms are two of the proud founding members of this sale, which started in 1988; Quail Valley Farms is new to the Connection group this year. From its inception, the sale has become one of the premier Santa Gertrudis sales in the United States by offering their best and standing behind their product. Each year, some of the breed’s highest selling lots are sold here, along with many national show winners. State Fair of Texas Dallas, Texas Friday, Oct. 11 The countdown is on to the 2019 State Fair of Texas, Sept. 27-Oct. 20. At 24 consecutive days, the State Fair of Texas is the longest-running fair in the United States, as well as one of the largest. Since its establishment in 1886, the State Fair of Texas has promoted Texas agriculture, education and community involvement. Agriculture serves not only as a pillar of this organization but as a fundamental feature of the Lone Star State and its history. The State Fair of Texas offers a variety of interactive exhibits focusing on agriculture and livestock, as well as engaging demonstrations. The fair also exposes visitors to emerging technologies and production practices that are used by U.S. cattle producers and U.S. Santa Gertrudis breeders. The Santa Gertrudis show, hosted at the fair, is the breed’s National Show and also its largest, boasting nearly 150 head of Santa Gertrudis and Santa Gertrudis-influenced cattle each year. The Santa Gertrudis show is an excellent opportunity for breeders to showcase the genetic improvements made by the Data Driven, Profit Proven breed.

Through the preservation of the art, history and culture of the American West, the Briscoe Western Art Museum inspires and educates the public with engaging exhibitions, educational programs and public events reflective of the region’s rich traditions and shared heritage. The museum showcases a collection of paintings, sculptures and Native American artifacts, as well as stagecoaches, saddles and a collection of more than 55 pairs of spurs dating as far back as 1790. The museum’s permanent gallery includes three levels, where visionary artists and everyday people tell the story of the West. The NewWorks Gallery features a rotating display of the museum’s newest acquisitions. Briscoe Museum’s McNutt Sculpture Garden is a lush, public, outdoor space that features a beautiful courtyard surrounded by bronze sculptures depicting iconic figures of the American West; the impressive works are created by some of the country’s leading Western artists. Opened to the public less than a decade ago, the museum has an interesting mix of modern and historic architecture that guests of all ages are sure to enjoy. NuGen Sale at Wendt Ranches Bay City, Texas Saturday, Oct. 19 Wendt Ranches is proud to host the 2019 NuGen Foundation Sale with NuGen partners MC Ranch and Goodin Farms. Each of the operations share similar performance-based philosophies that ensure the sale will offer high-quality cattle. In February 1995, the SGBI Board of Directors approved a “NuGen Project” proposal presented by the chairman of breed standards to create a new Santa Gertrudis strain, or gene pool, by reconstructing the original 3/8 Brahman x 5/8 Shorthorn, which is recognized as a purebred Santa Gertrudis. As the final step of the NuGen project, every NuGen animal was mated to a purebred Santa Gertrudis to ensure all genetics trace back to the breed’s foundation herd sire, Monkey. NuGen genetics were made available to the public for the first time at the inaugural sale hosted by MC Ranch in April 2015. Since then, NuGen genetics have been integrated into herds across the United States and exported internationally. The 2019 sale combines the annual Wendt Elite Sale in conjunction with the NuGen Sale and includes 43 NuGen females and three NuGen bulls fromWendt Ranches, MC Ranch and Goodin Farms.
