AND THE FUTURE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT

TREY AMICK

Today, digital evidence offers deeper and more reliable layers of proof that often exceed the reliability of fingerprints or an eyewitness’s recollection of what occurred during a crime. From text messages and emails to cloud data and surveillance footage, digital evidence has become a driving force behind successful prosecutions. With this shift, however, comes a staggering volume of information, far more than any

investigator can effectively process alone. T hat’s where artificial intelligence steps in. AI is revolution izing digital forensics, enabling law enforcement to uncover critical evidence more quickly, solve cases with greater precision, and potentially shield investigators from the toll of repeatedly viewing disturbing content. From data recovery and examining network traffic, to analyz ing social media, identifying patterns, and transcribing phone calls, AI can quickly sift through vast amounts of data, highlight ing relevant evidence while filtering out irrelevant information. These capabilities empower law enforcement to make timely and informed investigative decisions. This evolution is a glimpse of the future unfolding today. HOW AI IS SHAPING CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS One of the most valuable applications of AI in digital foren sics is in the analysis of massive datasets. With investigations involving multiple desktop computers, laptops, and mobile de vices containing terabytes of text, audio, and video data, AI tools enable investigators to quickly identify key evidence, significantly reducing the time required to close cases. In financial crime investigations, AI helps law enforcement detect fraudulent activities—such as money laundering—by analyzing large volumes of transactional data. The ability to rec

ognize complex and suspicious activity enables faster and more accurate criminal identification, providing a critical advantage over traditional manual analysis. Meanwhile, AI-powered crime-mapping tools help law enforcement visualize connections between individuals and their movements across various platforms. This analytical capability is especially useful in dismantling organized criminal networks, where understanding and mapping relationships and connec tions between suspects is essential to building a comprehensive case. THE GROWING THREAT OF AI AS A TOOL FOR CRIMINALS Unfortunately, while AI offers significant advantages to po lice investigations, criminals are also leveraging the technology for illegal activities. As AI becomes more advanced and access i ble, it is increasingly being used by criminals to commit sophisti cated crimes. Deepfake technology, for instance, allows offenders to fabricate evidence, impersonate individuals, and engage in financial fraud or identity theft. The rise of AI-powered phish ing attacks has automated the process of tricking people into disclosing sensitive information. On the darknet, criminals utilize AI to mask their identities and encrypt communications, thereby complicating law enforcement efforts to identify suspects.
