TGN-Intra Asia cable system

Two new formers RG Attachments Ltd (Tape Formers) has developed two new tape formers for its standard Tape Former range, expanding the maximum Tape Former tape width from 210mm to up to 480mm. The new models, model H and model I, have been developed in response to customer demand. The RG Tape Former is used by cable manufacturers to longitudinally fold a variety of insulating materials around cable cores before entering the final jacketing stage. They can be used with many insulating tapes including Mylar, paper and metallised foils and can insulate a wide range of cables including LAN, power, telephone, communication, coaxial and automotive cable. The Tape Former is positioned just before the extruder head and is said to guarantee precision folds. With an extensive selection of models and folding profiles, a Tape Former can be manufactured to customers’ precise requirements. RG Attachments Ltd – UK Fax : +44 116 261 2403

Tata Communications and Tyco Telecommunications have announced the installation, testing and commissioning of the TGN-Intra Asia (TGN-IA) cable system. Arriving at the conclusion of a comprehensive test programme, which verified compliance with all transmission requirements, the companies have completed the final step in achieving regional and global connectivity in southeast Asia for the TGN. The fully operational 6,700km TGN-IA system links Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Vietnam and the Philippines, providing route diversity throughout the Asia-Pacific region. “The Tata Communications team is very excited to have completed our TGN-IA cable system, with the support of Tyco Telecommunications,” said Simon Cooper, vice president network strategy, architecture and optimisation, Tata Communications. “This system will meet the ongoing need for increasingly robust international connectivity, and will help to enable continued growth and development in the Asia-Pacific region.” He also added: “Very recently almost all of the region’s key cable systems experienced simultaneous cuts, severely impacting network traffic across Asia. Most were damaged somewhere between Hong Kong and Taiwan. TGN-IA was fortunately not disturbed as a result of Tata Communications’ specific decision to route the cable system as diversely as possible, so helping to improve regional business stability and ensuring our customers remain well served.” The system, which was strategically designed and routed to avoid earthquake and other hazardous areas in the Asia-Pacific region, has an initial design capacity of 3.8Tbps on a city centre to city centre basis. When combined with the Tata Global Network TIC and Pacific cable systems, the Intra Asia cable system will complete Tata Communications’ multi-Terabit capability from India to Asia and onward to the United States, and is a strong complement to existing regional systems. The system integrates seamlessly with the Tata Global Network and is a key piece in enabling Tata Communications’ global connectivity. The TGN Intra-Asia Cable System is believed unique in offering a direct fibre path between Singapore and Tokyo, delivering the fastest available connectivity (RTD is 63ms).
