GRIPPING GECKOS Geckos are small lizards found nearly everywhere in the world other than Antarctica. South Africa has over 100 different kinds of geckos and they come in all shapes and sizes. They are generally nocturnal and are seldom seen during the day, as they hide, safe from the sun and predators, under rocks, in burrows and in deep cracks in the bark of trees. The gecko is a little carnivore snacking on whatever it can overpower. They are super interesting so let’s take a closer look.
How the gecko can teach spiderman a trick or two! Geckos are well known for their ability to climb up all kinds of surfaces. This is because their toe pads are covered in millions of small hairlike structures called setae, which then split even further into hundreds of smaller branches. The hairs’ role is to create a bond with the surface. This gives the gecko feet an enormous surface area enabling them to adhere quickly and easily to a variety of surfaces.
