Toll of the Sea

On a beautiful day in August, the Chebeague community gathered at Chandler’s Cove Field to honor the vision of Mabel and Sanford Doughty in a ceremony to dedicate “Chebeague’s Toll of the Sea”Memorial Monument. Sanford had often remarked that he longed to see such a monument so that the names of those whose deaths were either resulting from or closely associated with the ocean not be forgotten. After his death in August 2013, memorial contributions were designated for a fund to erect such a plaque. The Chebeague Island Historical Society coordinated this project under the leadership of Donna Miller Damon and Binkie Boxer. Sanford and Mabel ‘s granddaughters, Laura and Amy, and great-granddaughter, Mabel, unveiled the plaque.

Immediately following the monument dedication, Mabel was honored in a “legislative sentiment” recognizing her long life of service to the Chebeague community. Her many contributions were also lovingly recalled by Beverly Johnson. Jackie and her family extend deep gratitude to the entire Chebeague community.

The Council held their Annual Membership meeting August 13. There was a unanimous and positive response from the Council members in support of the 2016–2017 Board. We are

happy to welcome our new Board members: Nancy Olney, Christine Auffant, and Jaye-Allison Nunan. The Council Board has worked very hard over the last year and will continue to work to provide the critical services the Island community depends on. I know the community is grateful for these services and the Council is grateful to the community for all their help and support. Our membership is up, our Board is fully staffed, and we are looking forward to a busy and successful year!
