Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley Newsletter Dec 2018

Building strength, stability and self-reliance through permanent shelter.

MISSION: What we believe Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization founded on the principle that every man, woman and child should have a durable, safe place to live in dignity, and that shelter for families should be a matter of consciousness and action for all. NEED: Who we serve

We serve low-income families in need of safe housing. It is challenging for the families we serve to locate and qualify for safe, afforda- ble, quality housing in conventional ways. Most make trade-offs in order to cover their rent or mortgage, including taking second jobs, cutting back on health care and healthy food, and moving to less safe neighborhoods. IMPACT: Why we do it Habitat’s process demonstrates that people

thrive when they have a permanent residence in a stable community. An affordable place to live helps place families on a path of opportunities with increased dignity and self -reliance, giving them the chance to create savings and to invest in their education. Habitat works with families to help them acquire the skills and financial education necessary to be successful homeowners. By partnering with Habitat, families seize the oppor- tunity to work for their goals.

Habitat knows that safe, affordable housing plays a critical role in preparing families with the skills they need to break negative social cycles. Through shelter, we empower.

“Habitat for Humanity has successfully removed the stigma of CHARITY by substituting it with a sense of PARTNERSHIP .” -Jimmy Carter

WHAT WE EXPECT: A partnership in accountability and accomplishment The time and labor of staff, hundreds of volunteers and partner families, efficient building methods, modest house sizes, and affordable or zero-interest loans make it possible for under- served families to purchase Habitat houses. Becoming a homeowner is an enormous endeavor for everyone involved. It takes a lot of hard work and determination.

Our program prepares approved families for the day they move into their home by offering financial education classes that cover budgeting, credit, debt and loans, saving, investing, and emergency situations, as well as the mortgage process. Gaining an in-depth understanding of these im- portant concepts develops tools in their tool belt to help build a solid future. Much like having an affordable place to call home builds pride and self-esteem, being able to take control of ones finances builds confidence and momentum to dream big and work hard.

We have learned that practical financial education and hundreds of hands-on sweat-equity hours from each family member lead to a meaningful, collaborative, synergistic investment in the home, and builds pride in the family unit’s achievement and a solid foundation for long-term personal success.

89 cents of every dollar is directly applied to construction costs and family services expenses.
