Previewing the 2000-2001 Torero Golf Season

The 2000-2001 University of San Diego Golf Team, under the direction of 15th year coach Frank Cates, returns e ight players from last year's squad that won two tournaments and placed second at three other invitati onals . With the ir strong showing during the recent 2000 fall season, inc luding wins at the Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational and 49er Collegiate C lass ic, thi s year's squad will be shooti ng for a spot in the 200 I NCAA Division I Reg ional Tournament. Coach Cates wi ll count on a duo of seni ors - Ryan Hanratty (Plano, Texas) and Jason Gross (San Clemente, Californ ia) - to continue USD's upward rise as one of the program's to watch on the west coast. The Toreros will head into their 200 I spring schedule with a west reg ion ranking of 14th (out of 27 teams) , and a national ranking of 57th . Ryan Hanratty, a Honorable Mention All-West Coast Conference pick a year ago, led the Toreros this past fall with four strong showings out of the six invitationals that USO participated in. He placed 7th overall at the Pacific Invitational with his 2-under par score of 214 (72 -69-73) as USO finished fourth out of seventeen teams ; he finished second overall with a 2 12 showing (70-69- 73) at the Herb Wimberly/New Mexico State Intercollegiate with USO finishing fourth; he placed tied for eighth at the Countrywide

a solid 220 (75-74-71) at the 49er Collegiate, placing thirteenth overall with USO winning the team playoff against host Long Beach State University. Named the WCC Golfer of the Month (October, 2000), Hanratty led USO with a 73.41 average over 17 fall rounds. Jason Gross was a close second to Hanratty this past fall finishing with a 73.59 stroke average over his 17 rounds. His fall season was highlighted by his top-ten finish at the Fal– con-Cross Creek Invitational that USO won; his 12th place show– ing at the Herb Wimberly/New Mexico State Intercollegiate (216; 72-73-71 ): his team-best 221 at the Fresno Lexus Classic; and his sixth place showing at the 49er Coll egiate where he finished with a team-best 216 (75 -67-74).

Other returners expected to play key roles and compete for spots in the Torero rotation include first-year graduate student Jeppe Nielsen (Oslo, Norway), who tied for third at the Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational; j unior Berry Henson (La Quinta, CA), who averaged 74.88 this past fa ll over 17 rou nds, inc luding two rounds of 69; junior Andy Brisbois (La Canada, CA), last season's Most Improved Player; and sophomore David Isaacson (No rth Oaks, MN), who placed 11th twice last season and th is past fa ll averaged 75 .1 8 in 17 rounds of action. Rounding out Coach Cates' roster are returning sophomores Brad Sader (Brea, CA) and Andrew Zimmerman (Layton, UT), and a trio of newcomers - sophomore Nick Manfre (Corralitos, CA), and fres hmen Mike Shelly (Tumo n, Guam) and Mark Hepler (Lakeside, CA). The Un iversity of San Diego participates in NCAA Division I and is a member of the West Coas t Confe rence (WCC).
