UTILITY OVERVIEW DRAINAGE
MISSION STATEMENT
To provide engineering services for the City’s drainage and environmental systems to support the building of a healthy, sustainable community.
KEY PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
The Drainage Utility’s primary responsibility is to manage the City’s stormwater runoff and flood protection in partnership with the Operations Division. The Utility also plans, designs and constructs drainage infrastructure; implements erosion and sediment control measures; manages soil deposition and extraction; controls coastal and lowland flooding; and undertakes initiatives in support of the region’s Integrated Liquid Waste Resource Management Plan. Due to the intrinsic link between drainage systems and natural watercourses, the Drainage Utility also funds environmental works related to stream corridors, water
quality, contaminated sites, terrestrial habitat and biodiversity. Some of the key programs administered by the Utility include:
Salmon Habitat Restoration Program (“SHaRP”); Boundary Bay Ambient Monitoring Program; Integrated Storm Water Management Plans; Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy; Biodiversity Conservation Strategy; Safe and cost effective drainage services; and Adaptive plans based on evidence-based monitoring.
