August is the month of boats swarming around Chebeague Island. If one spends any time this month on our island, one will be surrounded by boats. No more romantic image exists than the vision of white sails on the limitless blue horizon. Explore the beaches or picnic on Rose’s Point or Deer Point. Listen to the steady pulse of lobster boats tending traps just off shore. Barges and ferries arrive and depart overloaded with passengers and all the necessities of modern society. Water taxis fetch technicians to service the high-tech connections we all rely on. Have you ever explained to customer service that the repair van can’t just drive here? Making the turn on the John Small Road, one is confronted by the new industry of the boat yard, a bustling marina serving boaters from all over Casco Bay. Fortunately, the sailing club still thrives and young people are learning to sail and venture out onto the

EBB & THYME BAKERY & TAKEOUT AT THE SLOWBELL CAFÉ Imagine the times when all the boats used sails, the stone sloops returned from a summer of work, packets carried rusticators from Portland, and fishermen went out with nets and filled the hulls of Friendship sloops and dories with fresh catch and hauled them to market. What a glorious confusion that must have been. sea. Summer breezes are punctuated by the occasional boom of the starter’s cannon, and dozens of sails can be seen heading toward a distant mark. The floats at StoneWharf, Chandler’s, and Cousins Island maintained by the Town of Chebeague are choked with commuter boats that haul residents and workers back and forth every day. Kayakers paddle along, stopping at camp sites on Little Chebeague or Crow Island along the Maine Island Trail.
