CROSS COUNTRY The USD men's cross country team began its fourth seasonwith high expec­ tationsonly tohave some of them left un­ fulfilled. After leaving the mountains from high altitude training, the men placed third in the Cal. StateFullerton Invitational. Invitational honors went to Peter Woods forplacing in the top ten. Thisturned out tobe the team captain's only top performance, for after running in the Aztec Invitational, he was out for the remainder of the season with the mumps.The Toreros, however, were strong in experience and ability with their returning runners and the appear­ ance of several shining newcomers. The team was led by seniors Jamie Silber, Rob Lester and BrianYoung, who gave the team a lot of credibility and whose competitive racing accounted for a lot of close races throughout the season. Finishing the season inSan Francisco was the highlight of the year. With five men finishing in thetop thirty, the Toreros were given the opportunity to send two men to theNCAA Regional Race held this year in Fresno. Top runners Kevin Eppich andBretHams brought honorin racing wellagainst the finest runners in the nation. For the women's cross country, Lori Morgan turned in her best season of the past two years with an 11-1record. Lori's only loss was to the Washington State champion. The women's team turned in a fine performancein finishing second at the Cal. State Fullerton Invitational. Good job, runners!
