Shaney Fink begins her second year as US D's Aca–
"Th e greatest challenge to a Divi– sion 1athlete is to balance the demands ofsport while taking full advantage of the educational experience offered. The purpose of our program is to assist student-athletes in meeting this chal– lenge by offering tutoring, advising, mentoring and a quiet environmen t to study. The academic support program is designed to assist s tudents in adjust– ing to life at USD and developing sound academic and career plans. By pro– moting a philosophy of individual re– spons ibility, which encourages each student-athlete to value their educa– tional experience, the academic sup– port program assists each athlete to realize theirfiill potential." Two seasons ago she was on the Torero volleyball coaching staff as a first year assistant, helping the Toreros to a 23-6 record and second round finish in the NCAA Tourna– ment. Prior to USO she gained coaching experience at the high school , co ll ege and international levels for four years. She capped off a stellar collegiate career ( 1990-93) at Ca l Berkeley and won selection to the All-Pac IO Decade Team . Fink comp leted her B.A., graduating with honors in Social Science from Berkeley in 1994. She is currently working on a Masters Degree at USO in Counseling. Re– cently married, Shaney and her husband, Tom Yorkoper, reside in Del Mar.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT CENTER The USO Athletic Academic Support Program is designed to promote the academic development of student-athl etes. The primary objective is to offer the necessary resources for the academic success of student-athletes as they work to earn their degree . Academic Support Services are designed to enhance the student– athlete's overall co ll eg iate experience and encourage development and attainment of academic and career goa ls. All USO student-athl etes have access to advising, tutoring and mentoring serv ices. The mento ring program, Access, was developed in 1999 and teams a graduate student in the Counse ling program with an athlete who would like to enhance study skill s, learn about campus resources and receive guidance on goa l deve lopment and attainment. Student-ath letes also have access to a qui et area where they can study or work in the computer center. In add iti on, student-athletes are encouraged to utili ze the campus learning centers including the Writing, Math and Logic Centers as well as to take advantage of the resources available to them in the Career Center, Counse ling Center and Computer Labs.
