Hartpury College Prospectus

Hartpury’s magical menagerie! | Hartpury boasts more than 70 species on its specialist campus, including meerkats, wallabies, fish, reptiles, rodents, birds, rabbits, emus, llamas and many more! Our Walled Garden has been developed to accommodate our ever expanding collection and to provide facilities that support students to gain the knowledge and practical experience they need to enhance their academic studies and give their CVs a boost. We’re constantly looking at ways to enhance our collection and increase opportunities for our students to gain not only handling experience but also to experience first-hand the best way to care for them; from husbandry to diet, enrichment and exercise. We’ve recently given our ferret enclosure a complete makeover too.

Making new friends | Wendy and Wonda, the new female emus, have been brought to Hartpury to enrich the life of our male emu, Buddy after he lost his partner. After months of searching, a week of preparation by Hartpury staff and a 350-mile journey, Wendy and Wonda have settled well into their new home. In the same month, Hartpury welcomed a new Chinese water dragon, Bruce, two new hermit crabs and poison dart frogs to its collection and hatched some snakes - a first for the department!

Care home residents enjoy creature comforts | Residents at Scarlet Care Home had the chance to get up close and personal with creatures of the cuddly and crawly variety thanks to our students. They handled rabbits and guinea pigs as well as some of the more unusual members of Hartpury’s menagerie, including a corn snake and a giant African millipede. Students studying the Extended Diploma in Animal Management were able to share

their knowledge about the animals and how they care for them with the residents.
