COURSES

Dependent on your level of study, our courses can provide you with the skills and understanding of how to care for a wide variety of animals through theory and hands- on practical sessions. Studying subjects such as animal health, biology, handling and husbandry means you can pursue a wide range of career opportunities or progress on to university. Lessons have a strong focus on the development of employment skills and gaining practical experience and there are opportunities to work with a variety of animal-related organisations. We have close links with many local, regional and national organisations who support our students by offering them work experience. As well as your main course of study, there are opportunities to gain additional skills such as dog grooming. External speakers and extra-curricular visits to zoos and rescue centres are used frequently and will broaden your knowledge and experience of caring for a variety of animals. And, if you want to become a vet, our new Animal Science Diploma provides a great alternative route to prepare you for going on to study veterinary medicine and science at university. It’s also ideal for anyone wanting to pursue further study in Bioveterinary Sciences, Animal Sciences, Animal Nutrition or for those wishing to go directly into an Animal Science-based job after they finish college. It can be completed in two years or in three years if you choose the option of a sandwich year, giving you invaluable experience working in the industry. Plus, our Animal Science students are offered a guaranteed interview to study veterinary medicine with a leading vet school subject to achieving the required grades and entry requirements. We have a supportive team of experienced and enthusiastic lecturers with a range of knowledge of the industry, including animal technicians and groomers. Some staff have been involved in laboratory work, while others show horses and take part in dog agility, both training and competing. Many of our animal management students progress on to degree level study at Hartpury or other universities.
