Underwater adventure | Three UPS students were able to experience life as a submariner in the Royal Navy last year, after spending time with the Royal Navy Submarine Service in Scotland. They spent three days at the Royal Naval Acquaint Centre in HMS Caledonia, Fife, as they gained an insight in to the role a submariner plays in the Navy, which included taking the Royal Navy swim test and learning how to use a single person life raft on their first day. Will Perry, 17, said: “It was a great experience and being on board the HMS Astute was something that I will not forget.”

Now I’m going to Cardiff Uni to study criminology and then I hope to get a job in the public services. Marines look for next band of brothers | Around 200 students found out if they had the ‘state of mind’ required when the Royal Marines marched on the college looking for their next batch of recruits. They were put through their paces when the elite branch of the Royal Navy fast roped on to campus in helicopters to take them through fitness sessions, weapons briefings and leadership tasks. The students also had the chance to look around the aircraft, witness a boat display on the college’s lake, see unarmed combat and experience a climbing wall.
