THROUGH EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT, WE ARE COMMITTED TO YOU This program is a fundamental element of DAN’s work to cultivate a culture of safety in the diving community; its value and effectiveness are supported by industry experts as well as the full weight of DAN worldwide. The DAN Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) program was created to assist dive operators and professionals to identify and mitigate risks associated with managing a dive business. This program is an adaptation of well-established HIRA practices used in aviation, medicine, manufacturing and other fields, and is used by OSHA, FEMA and community-safety services worldwide. DAN has adapted the program to address the real-world concerns of dive operators, and it is already in use in DAN’s Europe and Southern Africa regions. WE SUPPORT YOU . DAN is committed to advancing a culture of safety by engaging with all stakeholders in the recreational scuba, freediving, sport, technical and professional dive communities worldwide to emphasize best diving practices and diver health and safety. We pledge to work with community leaders, medical service providers, chamber operators and technicians, business owners and operators, dive professionals and divers, to provide the programs, products and resources to build and sustain that culture.

DAN’S THREE-TIERED HIRA PROGRAM n HIRA Level 1 requires a dive operator or professional to have the fundamental training and equipment to manage injuries, and operating procedures in place to address emergencies. This assessment is completed online. n HIRA Level 2 requires further training, as well as the implementation and drilling of additional procedures and emergency action plans. This level also applies to dive operators and professionals and is completed online. n HIRA Level 3 is the full assessment and nearly every facet of the business and operations are addressed. This level applies only to dive businesses and can be conducted on site where requested.
