around. Walking down one of the back aisles, I came upon a woman with her husband who attended our church. The man was usually so nervous that he would run into the bathroom or out the back door whenever I called on them. But I caught him unexpectedly this time. Cheerfully, he asked how we were progressing with the side walk problem as his wife had told him of our dilem- ma. Well, he just happened to work for a cement compa- ny, and to make a long story short, he and his friends ended up delivering and setting the cement! Here was an answered prayer which depended upon my complete obedience and trust to the Lord’s voice. Being prayerful prepares you for experiences such as this. The Source of Devotion and Obedience Concept 7. Jesus’ devotion and obedience to the Father were direct results of frequent communion with the Father. Jesus learned that His success depended on never initiating any projects of His own:

I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 15 I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. 16

It is impossible to explain this concept thoroughly, but I know that every praying person has learned its truth. The more we are in the Father’s presence, the more we desire to do His will. The unusual passages in Hebrews 5:7, 8,
