and designs that He could declare: “he has nothing in Me.” 17 The many terms and titles Jesus used to character- ize the devil indicate His critical spiritual discernment of His adversary; an acumen which resulted from His daily communion with the Father. In prayer, the Holy Spirit shows us how to do battle with our enemy. A good illustration is the story of the king of Syria who could not understand how his private strategy sessions were revealed to the king of Israel. The answer was simple: A prophet named Elisha listened in on the conversations through the power of the Holy Spirit. 18 Rendered Impervious Concept 9. Prayer rendered Jesus impervious to the fiery darts of Satan and inured Him toward the enticements that accompany popularity. Jesus met His adversary during His time in the wilder- ness. Forty days of fasting and prayer had depleted His energies. Yet, although physically exhausted, Jesus used the Word of God to powerfully denounce the diabolical temptations which the devil hurled at Him. Satan fled, and the angels came and ministered to Jesus. Devils acknowledged Him to be the Son of God, but He had no time for their antics or ideas. Jesus set His course to do the will of the Father, and this He did by maintaining a won- drous prayer life and communion with the Father. The crowd crowned Him king when they beheld His power to multiply bread and fish to feed 5,000 people. Jesus, however, found it more blessed to abide in the Father’s will, so He withdrew to a mountain to be alone.
