also who believe in Me through their word. Now, thank God, I boldly come before the throne, no longer bogged down with trifles, but praying in the broad, sweeping terms of the great priestly prayer of Jesus. I know that He is neither a frail human telephone operator or some massive, complicated computer system. My Jesus is wonderfully and mysteriously a living part of the Godhead, and He is indeed personally concerned about me and my problems. I am encouraged to read about Stephen, the first recorded Christian martyr who, when he was dying, saw Jesus near (apparently giving great attention to Stephen’s situation):

But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened up and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 1

The Three Parts of the Prayer Jesus’ prayer in John 17 is the bank’s key because it so per- fectly expresses the will of the Father. My prayer (in tan- dem with and running parallel with that prayer) is the secondary key which enables the Holy Spirit (as the bank officer) to open the vaults of heaven for this hopeful child of God. I am impressed that Jesus prayed for Himself first. My personal tendency has been to pray for others, feeling that it was selfish and almost sacrilegious to be overly concerned with my own personal needs. But this mag- nificent prayer begins with a bold, direct request to the 136
