Help protect marine turtles
W e’re calling on citizen scientists to walk local beaches, spot marine turtle tracks and nests, and record information about possible threats. NSW Turtle Watch supports long term recovery and conservation of marine turtles by involving community members in beach monitoring, training volunteers, and helping agencies safeguard nests from marine debris, erosion, and light pollution on nesting beaches. If you can help, visit our website for tutorials and the monitoring manual, or contact us for more details and guidance. A rare nest of endangered loggerhead turtle eggs was recently found at Shelly Beach. Beach walkers discovered it after watching a turtle return to the water, quickly contacted WIRES, and triggered alerts to NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), NSW Turtle Watch and Central Coast Council. Council installed protective fencing around the dune because the mother turtle had laid the nest in a high traffic area. People could accidentally crush eggs or collapse the nest by walking over it. Predators such as foxes, dogs, goannas and birds may also raid nests. Experts from these organisations believe the nest contains 100 to 150 eggs which, depending on sand temperature, usually hatch in about 8 to 12 weeks. 24HR RESCUE HOTLINES 0447 877 149 https://:seabirdrescue.org.au Rescuing Seabirds, Shorebirds, Sea Turtles and Sea Snakes in NSW
