A few years ago, Johnson was speak- ing to students at the Stanford Graduate School of Business about how his com- petitive spirit as an athlete carried over into the boardroom. “The same principles really apply from being a basketball player as well as a CEO when you think about focus, strat- egy and discipline,” he said. “I’m still the same guy that has those same principles as a CEO as what I was doing as a basketball player. I’m a competitor. I hate to lose at anything.” To illustrate his point, he recounted a time when his wife encouraged him to play one-on-one against his daughter, who was about 15 years old at the time. I love winning and I took that same competitive spirit to the board- room as well.” Johnson’s exploits on the basketball court are legendary, from his days at Michigan State Uni- versity to “Showtime” with the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers to the “Dream Team” in the 1992 Olympics and eventually the Basketball Hall of Fame.
