MANDARIN

GRADES 9 TO 12 LKMBD – International Languages, Level 1 Mandarin, Academic 1 CREDIT “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Chinese is a language that stems from pictures and there is no conjugation at all! Learning Mandarin with its 5,000 years of history and culture is an adventurous journey. It reflects individual personalities and refines one’s self-value through the study of philosophical poems and idioms. This course is designed to emphasize the development of Mandarin oral communication, reading and writing skills to enable you to communicate with native speakers. During the first year’s study, you will fully grasp pronunciation skills and gradually build 250 to 300 Chinese characters. You will be able to use key sentences to communicate numbers, dates and time, family members and personal information, countries and languages, occupations and modes of transportation. You will start to explore Chinese culture, including social customs and the arts, by participating in cultural events and activities involving both in and out of school studies and excursions. There are no prerequisites for this course. LKMCU – International Languages, Level 2 Mandarin, Academic 1 CREDIT With 5,000 years of history, one-fifth of the world population and the fact that Chinatowns exist in all major cities in the world, Chinese influence is everywhere. Learning Mandarin provides a way for you to deepen your thoughts and widen your vision. In this course, you will continue to develop and apply your oral communication skills and improve your reading comprehension and writing skills by participating a variety of learning activities. You will be able to start expanding your vocabulary by making different combinations of individual characters you have previously learned. You will be able to communicate colours and clothing, weather and vacation, hobbies and daily routine, school subjects and facilities and make phone calls and requests. You will continue to explore Chinese culture, including traditional Chinese festivals, social customs and the arts, by participating in cultural events and activities involving both in and out of school studies and excursions. LKMBD or the same level of knowledge is required. Prerequisite: LKMBD – International Languages, Level 1 Mandarin, Academic

LKMDU – International Languages, Level 3 Mandarin, University Preparation 1 CREDIT

“If you want to see 1,000 miles wider, you need to climb one storey higher.” This is from one of the most famous Chinese poems and it appropriately describes the third year of Chinese study: aiming higher achieves more. In the third year of Chinese study, you will explore more traditional Chinese idioms to enhance your language ability and thinking skills throughout the year. You will learn to describe appearance and health, food and nutrition, shopping and decision-making, community and living environment, life and home. You will continue to explore Chinese culture by participating in cultural events and activities involving both in and out of school studies and excursions. LKMCU is required. Prerequisite: LKMCU – International Languages, Level 2 Mandarin, Academic LKEDUe – International Languages, Level 4 Chinese (Native Speakers), University Preparation / AP Mandarin Language & Culture Exam Preparation, eLearning 1 CREDIT This course prepares students for university study in Mandarin. Students will enhance their ability to use the language with clarity and precision, and will develop the language skills needed to engage in sustained conversations and discussions, understand and evaluate information, read materials for both study and pleasure and write clearly and effectively. Students will also have opportunities to add to their knowledge of the culture of countries where the language is spoken through the use of community resources and computer technology. Prerequisite or co-requisite: LKMDU – International Languages, Level 3 Mandarin, University Preparation *A language placement test is required for admission. The optional AP segments will prepare highly motivated students to write the AP Chinese (Mandarin) Language and Culture exam in May.
