It was pretty scary. The roof was caving in, whole families were hiding in the closet. Whole rooms flooded, water was being driven by the hurri- cane under the doors. “The tiles were vibrating and I thought they were going to fly at me.” The storm killed at least 14 people on the island.

But he absconded during his own defence and a sentenc- ing hearing at Reading Crown Court was told that police have been unable to track him down. Falkland stalwart’s grand achievement FALKLAND Cricket Club veteran Wilson Carlisle reached his second milestone of the year when he played his 1,000th game for the club in a home friendly with Oxenford. He marked his 70th birthday earlier this year and since he joined Falkland after moving to Newbury from Windsor in 1972, he has scored more than 18,000 runs in his 46 seasons at the club, which have included 19 as club chairman and a 18 as founder and manager of The Bowler’s Arms club bar and restaurant. He has also spent more than 20 years looking after the club ’s pitches at Enborne Lodge. Carlisle becomes the latest in a line of Falkland players to reach that 1,000 match milestone, following Keith Dyson, Ian White, Andy Townsend and Peter Randall. Tribute to commentator ONE of the country’s best-known voices of sport, Ralph Dellor, died after succumbing to cancer at the age of 69. The sports writer, journalist and TV and radio commentator was a cricketing mentor to Berk- shire in particular, and was a director and life member of Berkshire CCC. Ralph lived at Woolhampton until 2005 and since then at Ecchinswell, and from here he conducted his career that included work with BBC Grand- stand, Match of the Day and Test Match Special. He won the Jack Fingleton Award for cricket commentator of the year in 2000, but not only did he talk about the game, he wrote about it in a number of successful books, and he also played and coached the game to a high level as an ECB- accredited coach.

Greens and trees soak up CO2 so you’re actually cleaning up the atmosphere as well.”

THE grey, brutalist façade of the BT Telephone Exchange tower – which dominates Newbury’s skyline – could be turned into an oasis of lush greenery if the idea of one town councillor is accepted. Martha Vickers (Lib Dem, Northcroft) suggested to BT that the six-storey “ eyesore” should be cladded with a living wall. Mrs Vickers said“greening” the outside of the building
