EC Meeting Papers January 2019

15 SOUK (Shout Out UK) associated schools bringing 10 students each = 150 additional students + min. 15 teachers SOUK has connected and engaged with an additional 700 schools. Out of these, if there is 10% take up, it would mean 70 schools, bringing 5 students each = 350 pupils. Therefore attendance from schools will be on a first come first serve bases. We should anticipate that our initial audience number could be up to 600 participants, excluding teacher chaperones. School Union Competition This would need to be launched by the end of January 2019. The competition “How we set up our School Student Union” focus, is to challenge students from different schools to create an optimum School Union model from which others can learn and build upon. Aim To get schools to participate in setting up a union in their school which has a clear mission statement. How to elect reps. How to establish a fluid negotiation system within the school (between student body and SLT) How to inform the students about their Union How to develop campaigning skills (The above four steps could become the marking criteria for the competition judges.) Objectives The objectives of the festival and competition are: 1. To raise the profile of trade unionism and their multiple functions amongst young people. 2. To create the best, most workable model of trade union engagement with young people. 3. For the schools to have a significant platform on which to present their competition submissions. 4. For the festival to become a prominent yearly event in all school calendars. 5. To grow the festival to create an environment/forum where schools interact with one another to expand their knowledge on political, economic and environmental literacy. 6.
