EC Meeting Papers January 2019

2. Rarely reach outside of metropolitan areas.

3. Are under-resourced where they do exist.

4. Are not coordinated or learning from each other.

TWT is currently mapping political education initiatives in the UK to develop a directory of what is working well and where there are gaps in provision, as well as collecting material on best practice.

Why The World Transformed?

As organisers of The World Transformed (TWT) we are well placed to help change this

situation. Over the past three years TWT has built a reputation as one of the country’s

most exciting and influential political education projects.

Since its beginnings in 2016 our annual four day fringe festival has far exceeded the

size, scope and accessibility of the official Labour Party Conference Fringe, providing a

dynamic and exciting forum for different parts of the left to come together, learn from

each other, strategise and build relationships. Each festival has attracted over 5,000

participants to a range of workshops, forums and exhibitions as well as debates,

hackathons, theatre performances and club nights, all designed to develop political

education, awareness and exploration. Further, it ensures people aren’t priced out, by

providing affordable access, and speaks to a range of age groups with varying political

experiences and knowledge . It has been featured in all major national newspapers and

major broadcasters, as well as in the international press, and a wide range of political

publications. (See here for press regarding TWT2018).

As successful as it has become TWT festival remains a genuinely grassroots initiative, operating on a minimal budget, with no major funding and relying on the hard work of hundreds of volunteers.
