EC Meeting Papers January 2019

Pension Scheme.

There remains one active member in the GFTU pension scheme, the General Secretary.

Should for any reason the General Secretary no longer be employed by the GFTU under pensions regulations a Section 75 debt would automatically be triggered and the GFTU would be liable for around £3 million.

It is not possible to insure against this potential loss.

The EC as the main representative body of the GFTU employers has taken the decision to close the scheme to existing and future staff members, but has not unequivocally clarified that it would keep the scheme open to any future General Secretary. It is the view of the pension Trustees and in particular of course the GFTU employer representatives that the EC should take a minuted decision at its forthcoming meeting to allow access to the scheme to any future General Secretary.
