I Appeal To Caesar!

Saul, the leader walks slowly, cautiously, guarding his equilibrium. He is led by Artemus, who holds his hand; a second soldier walks close at his other side holding the reins of Saul’s horse. This is not the grand entrance Saul had envisioned! The pompous Pharisee is reduced to a helpless commoner led by the hand, with no one to greet him. One burning, persistent question agitates his mind: Who could the messenger of God possibly be, and what will the messenger say to him? * * * * * The long Street called “Straight” is jam-packed with people, animals, and heavily-laden carts. In vain blind Saul attempts to visualize the sights, sounds and smells through his ears and nose, but the deafening noise of the accelerated commercial activity defies his ability or imagination. The team finds the small hostel at the end of Straight Street where rooms are reserved for both Saul and Artemus; the other four will stay at a larger hostelry connected to a large stable that will house the horses, donkeys, and camel. Taken to his room, Saul slowly eases himself down to the floor, and cautiously reaches out to feel the bamboo mat. At that point, losing all strength, he collapses face down, spread-eagled and exhausted.

Artemus leaves to see that the men and animals are

situated.
