Once inside the valley, he is amazed to find numerous cave dwellings (some of which were formerly tombs) hewn out of the terraces on the surrounding cliffs. Everyone in Petra lives in a cave, most of which have been carved out of the sandstone mountain walls with flint instruments. Actually, living in a cool cave makes sense when one considers the high temperatures of the area.
