Caiaphas knows it would be a mistake for himself to assume this public role: any criticism or blame that might result must fall on someone else, like a trustworthy associate already visible to the public! Caiaphas must maintain his role of innocence as God’s High Priest! The man for this job must meet certain qualifications, narrowing the field considerably. Caiaphas develops his personal list, only to discover he has formulated a description based solely on his considerations of Saul of Tarsus!

• A religious man, a Jew in good standing • One known for his devotion to Scripture

• Preferably a dedicated Pharisee • Highly esteemed by the Sanhedrin • One who values Torah above worth of human life

For Saul to champion this project, Caiaphas knows that Saul himself must first feel justified in doing so, believing this effort is pleasing to God. Caiaphas now realizes he must come up with an undeniable justification, one based solely on Scripture (and common sense)! * * * * * Before asking for Saul’s leadership, Caiaphas feels it prudent to present the Purge to several of the leading Sadducees and a select group of about thirty-five Pharisees, all of whom have investigated and challenged Jesus’ ministry throughout the Holy Land.
