The Climactic Meeting

The time for the auspicious meeting called by the High Priest Caiaphas arrives. When all are seated (five Sadducees and forty-one Pharisees) there is a stirring at the auditorium’s doorway. Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, makes his surprise grand entrance, arms supported by a servant on either side. The assembly stands and applauds the sickly old man as he shuffles in with a benign smile and simple wave. His dead weight sinks into the special chair supplied just for him; the grey beard has grown very thin on his worn and withered face. * * * * * Caiaphas calls the meeting to order. He invites the six men, two Sadducees, and four Pharisees, that were preselected, to come and occupy the six special chairs arranged beside his own. “My dear brethren,” Caiaphas begins, “You are here because of our deep concern about the situation plaguing our beloved people, religion, synagogues, and Temple. As you know, five years ago, Jesus of Nazareth began his three-year ministry of challenging all that is near and dear to us. He was arrested and finally condemned to crucifixion, both by His happy, excited demeanor portends an upbeat meeting!
