Capturing Stephen and putting him on trial is both a formidable challenge as well as an absolute mockery of justice. This whole exercise requires daring and skill … you don’t just snatch a man loved by the Jewish population, especially those associated with the Greek-Speaking synagogues of Jerusalem. Stephen’s Torah teachings have been received with excitement and enthusiasm. Even more, his acts of mercy as a “deacon” or “servant” of the Believers’ Community (helping the Jewish widows and orphans) are well known and acclaimed. And, most amazing of all, verifiable healing miracles are occurring through his prayers!!! Caiaphas and his scheming thugs realize that Stephen must be apprehended when and where there will be no public outcry; Stephen does have many personal friends, and they must not intervene!
