This award is presented each year to an alumna/alumnus of USD who has made a significant contribution to the field in which he or she works and has served the university and community as well. Other Class of '64 recipients of this honor are Mauraan (Pecht) King and Anna (Baahlar] Lun– nackar, who won together with her husband, Richard '63. Anne is director of the School of the Madeline Preschool in San Diego's Bay Park area.... Patty [Murphy] Christupharsun, who is from San Diego and living in Omaha, Neb., reports that two of her four children have headed to California to seek their for– tunes. The other two remain in college in the Midwest. Patty is working part time in an art print and framing shop in Omaha. 1965 CLASS CHAIR: Maureen Lansdale Buckley Class Correspondent Karan Thialka writes: "This alumni magazine is a great way to com– municate not only with members of our own class but with the classes that bordered ours– at least I can never be content reading only news of the Class of '65 ! If no one writes, no one reads. It's up to you to write to me to share what has been going on in your life. With many of our families grown and living independently (our two sons are in graduate school at UCSD and Cambridge), there should be lots to tell about how we have been redis– covering life! For those of you who are still raising children, it's nice to share what they are doing. Not all of us have been parents, but all of us do have something to share. Please write and let your classmates know what is important in your life." ... Tica (Dayle] Eastman is working on a biography of her mother and her grandmother, and spent time in Costa Rica last year doing family history research... . Bran– da (Bartek] Gomaz is teaching English and doing career counseling at Linn Benton Com– munity College in Oregon. She is married to Richard Gomez and lives in a home on five acres.. .. Carolyn Shaflar has signed a contract to have a book published, and she and the co– author are deeply involved in completing the work. The subject is building community, and she comments that the writing of the book has given them a great deal of insight and practical experience in the subject matter. Carolyn and her husband survived last year's firestorm in the Berkeley hills with no damage to them– selves or their property, but they did have to evacuate with no assurance that anything would be standing when they returned. 1966 Shirlee C. Hicks (M.S. '71) is a self-employed R.N. and golf professional in Berryville, Ariz. She works with physically challenged individu– als, helping them "return to golf and life." Class correspondent Martha S. Lapora lost her mother in November 1992, four months after her husband, John, lost his mother. They plan to retire in Coronado in 1994 after John com– pletes 20 years with a school system in the Boston area.... Paggy [Wlll'Zar] Haydon taught school for several years after leaving USD and lived in Washington, D.C., as a Navy wife in the early '70s before returning to Chicago. There she began a successful career in retail and special event public relations. She recently settled in her new home in Bettendorf, Iowa, and is reviewing options for her next career move.... Angia [Palannu) Ellis also taught for several years after graduation, then took a leave of absence for 14 years as she and her husband, Jay, raised their three children, Lisa, Julie and John. Five years ago she returned to education, teaching second graders in the Hunt Valley, Md., school system....Latty Buckley fol– lowed the path of education, too, teaching in New York grammar schools for years. Now she is a real estate agent for residential proper– ties. Letty and another New Yorker, Judy (Failing) Cola, stay in touch with each other and also with classmates Hisako "Susie' Kawaski and Nancy Buller, both of whom occa– sionally travel to the States from homes in Japan and Vancouver, respectively. 1964 Class Correspondent Dalla Willett writes: "Write me, call me, FAX me (314-997-3531)! Tell me what you're doing. I'm living in St. Louis, running a big community relations pro– ject for the Cable Advertising Network. (Some things never change.)" ... Cullatta [Padarawski] McCanna lives in North Dakota, where she is a farmwife and teacher at the Larimore City Schools. She has three children in college and one in high school.. . . Jaa Navadumsky is back in the United States after living 17 years in Nigeria, where he was a professor of anthro– pology. Since returning, he has been tapped by UCLA as a visiting professor in African art history and approached by Cal State-Fullerton, where they are hoping to make him head of the department. In January, he left for Zimbabwe to serve as resident director of California State University International Programs and will return in December. Joe is married and has a son. He is maintaining two homes--0ne in Southern California and one in Nigeria-and makes frequent trips back and forth to see fam– ily and friends. Rick C. Picard lives in Greensboro, N.C., where he is a full-time accounting student at North Carolina A&T University, preparing for the CPA exam. 1972 CLASS CHAIR: Sandee (Walton) Schons Michael L. Hall, M.D., lives in Englewood, Colo., where he has an OB/GYN practice. He and his wife, Martha, have two children, Michael and Nathaniel ... Greg Nolan writes that he is "alive and well in Washington State." He lives in Vashon, Wash.. .. Catherine [Piscevic) Orlando and Maria Orlando '71 write that their son Jason is a junior at USD and is in student government. He has also been sophomore and junior attendant for USD's homecoming. The Orlandos live in Ramona, Calif., with their 13-year-old daughter, Rosie... . Stephan Rodriguez completed his Ph.D. in instructional systems at Florida State University in Tallahassee in the summer of 1991. He is now assistant professor and direc– tor of the instructional technology program at San Jose State University.... John C.
