Chebeague Island Council Calendar February 2025 Issue #2

The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. It is available on-line at Chebeague Island News (www.chebeague.org) or www. chebeagueislandcalendar.com and delivered to every active mail box on the island. The Calendar welcomes submissions from its readers, including letters and thank you notes, but it cannot publish anything that is political in nature, libelous, or obscene. All submissions should include the author’s name and contact information. Without exception, the deadline for submissions is noon on the 20 th day of the month preceding publication. Submissions and ad copy may be mailed (247 South Road), left at the Council office (on 247 South Road) or emailed (chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com) and sent as attachments (.doc; no pdfs) or included in the body of the text. Images and photographs should be sent in a .jpg, .jpeg, or .rtf format. Please do not use the old email address at as this is an inactive account. As a courtesy and space permitting, island nonprofits are given up to a free half page each month to publish their news. Any such submissions exceeding a half page will be charged at the usual rate. All submissions become the property of the Chebeague Island Council, which reserves the right to edit them for length and clarity. Submissions that are not time sensitive may be held until there is enough space to publish them. Additional information about submissions is available at www.chebeagueislandcalendar.com. Advertising rates are as follows: full page, $80, ½ page, $40; ¼ page, $20; 4-line classified, $10; 6 to 8 line classified, $15. Each submission should include the intended publication date, size wanted, and the number of months the ad should run. All ads must be paid for at the time of submission.

Staying Warm During Chebeague’s Coldest Months

On Chebeague: Boarding begins 10 minutes before departure. Arrive at the ferry at boarding time to minimize waiting in the cold. The crew will have the boat warm and ready for you! Please try not to drop off workers early, as there is no shelter at the Stone Pier. On Cousins: The freight shed has a heater that brings the temperature up to a comfortable 60 degrees. The bus is also a warm and cozy option, and even those parking on Cousins Island can board the ferry to wait. (Note that the bus may not be available for the last trip if there are no passengers coming over on the ferry.)

Commitment to Safety: Ongoing Improvements at CTC

At CTC, we are committed to ensuring a secure environment across all aspects of our transportation system—from our parking lots to our buses and ferries. Over the next several weeks CTC, coordinating with Central Maine Power, will enhance lighting in both the Cousins and Route One lots. New security measures, including video surveillance, will be installed at the Cousins lot.

CTC is grateful to the Raymond Family Foundation for awarding us a grant of $5,000. This generous support will help underwrite the cost of providing reliable transportation services to Chebeague Island. We deeply appreciate the Foundation's commitment to our shared goal of ensuring safe and dependable travel for our residents, visitors, and businesses. Winter has a firm and chilly grip on Chebeague, and while the island is quiet now it’s only a few short months until it pops back into gear for spring, summer

and fall - the extra busy seasons for island nonprofits. And with the arrival of February, it’s also nearing time when the island’s nonprofits can begin thinking about what grant proposals they might want to submit to The Recompense Fund for 2025. Typically grant applications are due mid-April, with grants decided upon by the end of May. Look for next month’s Calendar for the official dates. Recompense’s mission is to support nonprofits ‘in their efforts to sustain Chebeague Island as a year-round community.’ In 2024, thanks to the truly generous support of our donors, Recompense was able to distribute $66,000 toward nonprofit work in transportation, education, elder support, childcare and more. New Duplex Updates Have you recently driven by the future home of the new year-round affordable housing units? The initial site work has been completed and the crew that has been working on our foundation is nearing the end of their work! Our next steps are to prepare for the modular boxes to be delivered to the island. Our hope is that these boxes will be delivered towards the end of this month. Do you like to paint? Or enjoy landscaping? We are looking for volunteers to assist us in finishing a few projects once the duplex is set. Reach out to us at Alaskamckenzie@gmail.com if you have an interest in helping!
