IIW welded art exhibition, 2021

MILAN MARONEK (Slovakia)

Milan works as a Professor and Head of the Department of Welding and Materials Joining at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava – Faculty of Materials Science and Technology. For him, photography is a kind of magic where words cannot describe what we see, feel and perceive at a given moment. He photographs through his heart and trys to make his photos look aesthetic and emotional to the viewer. The current image editing technologies give the photographer unexpected possibilities in this area. Nevertheless, he prefers composition purity and simplicity.

Exhibit “RAINBOW BEAD” Macro photography of stainless steel circumferential weld bead using Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) method. The intentional reduction of the shielding gas flow rate oxidized the weld face and the heat-affected zone. The greater the thickness of the oxide layer, the darker the colour due to daylight interference on the oxide layer. The colour gradually changes from chrome to straw, gold, blue and purple. In some industries, like pharmaceuticals, the presence of any colour is unacceptable. When creating art objects by welding, on the contrary, it is often welcomed.
