IB – JAPANESE B (SL Only) Subject Summary: The IB Japanese course is designed for students who have studied Japanese in Year 9 and 10 up to at least Phase 3 level. Over the next two years, students will continue to develop their language proficiency as well as their cultural knowledge. Assessment Outline: IB Assessment (SL): All IB students will practise skills by doing interactive oral tasks as well as sample IB exams in Year 11. However, Year 11 marks will not count towards the final IB marks. The final IB result is determined in Year 12 as follows: Internal Assessment: 30% of the total marks at the end of the Language B course are allocated to the internal assessment of oral work, all of which is completed in Year 12. This internal assessment score consists of two marks: the compulsory Individual Oral and the mark for one of three mandatory interactive oral activities (normally the best one). Individual Oral: 10 minutes taped under examination conditions and submitted for moderation (Presentation with a photograph and guiding questions) External Assessment: Written assignment (300 to 400 words) 20% – Intertextual reading followed by a written exercise of 300 to 400 words plus a 100 word rationale, on the core topics (completed in class under examination conditions). Paper 1: 25% Text handling: short written responses; three texts and 40 questions Paper 2: 25% One Written task (SL: minimum 500 characters) Subject Outline by Semester: Core Topics: • Communication and Media; Global issues; Social relationships Options (select two): • Cultural diversity; Customs and traditions; Health; Leisure; Science and Technology Semester One Topics: Exchange students: formal way to introduce themselves and honorific expressions; making requests; writing formal letters; talking about school. Family life and celebrations: keeping a diary using plain form; expressing feelings; informal speech; making comparisons; discussing Japanese New Year; asking favours. Semester Two Topics: Leisure and Fitness: talking about their interests; discussing their preferences; discussing their sporting activities and fitness; showing how to do something; writing a film review. Environmental Issues: recycling in Japan and the Gold Coast; conservation of water; protecting wildlife; expressing intentions; expressing opinions; objectively discussing issues from different points of view. Semester Three Topics: Accommodation, Transport, Sightseeing, Part–time job, Tourism, Business, Unemployment, Current affairs, The media: television; magazines; newspapers; Advertising; Internet Semester Four Topics: School Formal, Future career, Driver’s licence, Volunteer work Science and technology, War and peace, Politics, Current affairs, Coming of age, graduation, future directions .
