A little fu rther, on the le ft, is the en trance to the R oeskilde R ailw ay S ta tio n , opposite to w h ic h , in the centre o f th e ro a d , stands the O b e lisk , called Frihedsstøtten , or T h e P illa r o f L ib erty , raised b y the p e asan ts in comm em oration o f th eir em anci­ p atio n from villenage by C hristian the S eventh and F re d e rik th e S ix th , then C row n P rince. T h e O b e lisk , w hich re sts on a p ed estal o f N orw egian m arble, is 4 8 feet h ig h , and b ears on its sides su itable inscriptions. On the e ast and w est sides o f the ped estal a re basreliefs , rep resen tin g a S e rfs release from V assalage, and the Goddess of Ju s tic e : and the fo ur corners are decorated w ith fo ur m arble figures representing F id e lity , P atrio tism , A griculture, an d B rav ery .
