T h e result o f the exam ination n o t being m ade p ublicly know n for a week, the young m a n , w ishing to gladden th e h e art o f his p a re n t, com m unicated in an e x ce lle n t, m o d est, sensible letter to his m o th er the resu lt as regarded h im self, begging h e r to keep it an entire secret from e v ery one else till its public announcem ent. T h e tem p ­ tation , how ever, w as too strong for the fo n d , vain h e a rt of the p o o r m o th e r, w h o , d isreg ard ing th e judicious injunction of h e r talented son, shew ed th e letter to som e m erchants o f E lsinore, h e r custom ers, w ith one o f w hom I happened a t the tim e to b e sta y in g , and thus obtained a sight o f it a few m inutes afte r its delivery by the post.
