Descending the steps in front of Seneca’s statue in Puerta de Almodóvar, we enter this quiet street. For its whole length it runs along- side the medieval wall that enclosed La Jude- ría and there are some pretty cisterns with runnels along which water flows. The street ends next to the seated statue of Averroes. 13. In the past, Cordoba was a walled city and within, it was divided into two large parts: La Almedina and La Ajerquía both of which were enclosed within independent fortifications and divided by a wall with narrow gates. One such gate is the recently refurbished Puerta de Almodóvar -the only to have survived from the Moorish period -flanked by two superb towers in front of which is the statue of Seneca.

Destacan el Claustro , de arquitectu- ra mudéjar y la Capilla de estilo gótico flamí- gero, rica en decoración plateresca y obra de Hernán Ruiz I. For two centuries, this complex was Cordoba’s only hospital. What is now the city’s Confe- rence and Exhibitions Centre was built in the 16th century. Worthy of note are its Mude- jar Cloisters and the Flemish Gothic Chapel , boasting a wealth of Plateresque decoration and designed by Hernán Ruiz I. 11. XIIIX- VIII: pintura, escultura, mobiliario y tapices. Cerrado temporalmente por obras de res- tauración. Located in the former Episcopal Palace , with a spectacular Baroque staircase boas- ting polychrome vaulting ascending from its courtyard, the museum houses a lar- ge collection of works from the13th-18th centuries including paintings, furniture and tapestries. It is temporarily closed due to restoration work. 12. Built by order of Al-Hakam II in the 10th cen- tury , in the Umayyad palace , it reflects the classical order of Roman baths: cold rooms, warm room and hot rooms, vaulted and lit by star-shaped apertures. It has recently been turned into a museum , offering visitors a plea- santly surprising experience. Built in the first quarter of the 14th cen- tury in the Mudejar style, the synagogue was in use as such until 1492 when the Jews were expelled from Spain. It is the only testament to Jewish heritage in the whole of Andalusia. Not having direct access from the street, its structure can hardly be seen from the street. A small vestibule is accessed via its courtyard to the right of which is a staircase leading to the women’s gallery. In front is the square-shaped main area, decorated with stylised Mudejar plant motifs. The wall supporting the women’s gallery in pier- ced by three arches decorated with highly beautiful plaster mouldings.
